lol Finally 5years later, Baby Turnips, wonderful winter veg💖.
On my allotment plot, I haven't been able to grow Turnips to save my life!!. During the growing season, they germinate well, put on growth for 2 to 3 weeks and..
..Bam💥, overnight the tops have all been eaten.
What was eating my tender little shoots😢. Did my research and Flea Beetles nibble and make the small holes in the leaves whilst the Cabbage Looper Caterpillar munches the whole lot!! .
This year I was not going to give up 💪.
Sowed some baby turnip variety seeds (suitable for containers) late September. They grew well, and around October moved the pot in the greenhouse, not necessary but you could say I was being over cautious.
Now we are enjoying these winter veg which should really be growing outdoors 😂.
Next year I am ready for those critters! Growing strong flavour herbs (like chives and garlic chives) near my turnip rows. Like I said, I am ready 🙌
It's cold, it's wet, it's the Pacific NW and we're getting ready to climb today's trees. -

Hops flowers dried and stored away. A herb that is relatively new to me, it is not one that my family used much and my knowledge, before joining The Herbalists and Heartwood, pretty much all came from them. It’s one of those plants I’d say I find oddly curious...rather than I’d say I like. It has an unusual aroma that is strangely therapeutic, calming and sleepy...if sleepy could be a smell 😉🍂🌿🧡

How is a permaculture garden different from a ‘regular’ garden?
For me the answer is ‘design’. .
Many elements of our garden are the same you’d find elsewhere but a lot of thought was put into positioning them in relation to one another. The compost heap is not in the middle of the plot, but close to the raised beds where most of the compostable material comes from and where the finished compost is used. Our peach and apricot are next to the pond which protects them from late spring frosts.... Smart design equals countless tiny decisions which together create a rich web of mutually beneficial relationships - and make the garden resilient and our life as gardeners much easier! #farmessentials #fruitsfarm #greenhouselife #farmlife #farmingtechnology #gardendesigns #kitchengarden #vegetablegarden #gardeningtips #gardeninglife
African Violet 🌱 it's one of the most beautiful blooming plants in winter ❄ It's important to remember that when watering 💦 don't water over the leaves, you can't even drizzle them as they are susceptible to rot. The leaves can be cleaned using a brush. 👌 Violets like lightly moist soil 💦 therefore it is worth using hydrobox ➡️ https://gohydrobox.com/ which provides optimal hydration 💦
I’m not sure if our plants benefit from use speaking to them, but I’m sure we benefit from having them around. Hug your favorite plant today for a little self care. 📷 @plantmomjess #BlackGirlsWithGardens
Merry Christmas from the fairies! 💚❤️ 🧚♂️ 🎄 ❄️ ⛄️
Nature is Abundant. ✨
One of the most common questions I receive: Aren’t all those other plants robbing nutrients away? And no absolutely not - you cannot steal something that is abundantly available to all! 4.5 billion years of life has created a plethora of #humus
and the dissolution of our planet (rock aka minerals) over the same time (longer) has added abundant fertility. That is the concept I base my soil mix on. High Humus + High mineral content aka rock dust, volcanic/basalt rock dusts. This stuff doesn’t go away in one crop guys. The amount even a heavy feeding crop utilizes is minuscule when growing in these types of soils. Now add the #NoTill
factor and nothing is leaving the essentially closed loop system except the actual fruits/consumables. There is so much minerals/nutrients going back to the soil when you mulch your leaves/stems and something you never see, the massively extensive root system decaying in place! Including the entire rhizosphere literally bursting with microbial life! So no, to answer the question...lack of nutrients is of the least concern....🤷🏽♂️😁. There is so much to elaborate on when you then take into account the plant/soil/microbe/mineral relationship and perhaps some might be interested in that as a MOB newsletter topic? ☘️ 🌱 Urban gardening 🌱☘️
Harvesting sweet potatoes 🍠 mung beans, basil, sage, and verbena, all in the tiny city balcony. 🍠 I swear I only put the one on the left inside the pot! I put it a few months ago to enjoy the flowers that grow from the root 🌸 🌺 but then they cloned themselves! 😀
I also discovered that it’s super easy to grow left-over sprouted mung beans after my 🥗 dish, and apparently they’re also good to enrich your soil with nitrogen.
Lastly, playing with soil and gardening, even on your urban pots and plants is really good for your first chakra and grounding issues 🌴
