It was not just a good meal but a very fun experience, because, @wagyumafia was in the house. It was very funny because while I was on my way to the restaurant in the taxi, we were texting each other too bad we would miss each other this time. He was here for a private event the night before and would be heading to the airport after lunch. _ 2 minutes after I sat down at 500 Chicken House, someone tabbed my shoulder from the back, and it was @wagyumafia 🤣🤣🤣. The most unexpected coincidence, we both dined at the same restaurant for lunch. So two tables became one, 2 became 6, and thank god with the bigger group we got to try so many more dishes. _ And that’s not it. @wagyumafia ‘s friends actually ate at Yamagishi at the same time as I did last year 😆😆😆😆 What’s the odd of that? At that meal I was helping Yamagishi san to translate the dishes in English for the counter, so that’s how we knew each other before. Now we were eating at the same table again, and became friends 😊. _ And, 5 secs after I posted @wagyumafia pic in my story, @fabrizio.fiorani who was in the ICSA event sent me another pic. He and Wagyumafic met up that morning......how small is this world???? But it was just so so fun! And I would love to come back here for another meal! They are similar to the ones in Japan but the price is a whole lot cheaper even it is one of the more expensive fish in TW. _ Deep fried oysters in restaurants or night markets is one of the most addictive eats for me in TW. Because the local oysters are small and pearl like with a very plump round body and not too briny, when they are deep fried, the inside sometimes really turned so creamy that it melts in the mouth. The crust is also different from normal fried oysters as Taiwanese like to use sweet potato flour 地瓜粉 which gives the surface of very crunchy bits. _ Vegetable rice is more like Shanghainese thing but it is so simple that people make their own at home (like my mom). In Shanghai they will put salted pork and melted lard but the version here is with tiny dried sakura shrimps. So comforting! _ Stir fried rice noodles is super common in TW as they are famous for rice noodles especially those from 新竹 Hsinchu. I think I might have missed taking pictures of some dishes. Taiwan has a very noticeable offals-eating culture and in many Taiwanese cuisine restaurants you will see an extensive selection of offals dishes. _ Stir fried pig’s liver (Top Left) is extremely popular and can make a name for a restaurant that does this particular dish well. _ Pig’s kidneys are extremely hard to cook well but in Taiwan I have had many good versions, most commonly boiled and served in sesame oil sauce with tonic herbs and ginger (Top Right) . When they are fresh and cooked properly, they are crunchy and bouncy without any offal / awful smell. 一 Pig’s large intestines are braised with soy marinade (Bottom Left) until tender, so succulent and fattilicious you would not miss the meat. _ The last pork dish was pork strips with semi dried tofu, scallions, basil and chilli. A very simple homey dish and extremely good with rice. _ These four dishes were anything innovative or most likely you see it in 99% of the TW restaurants you visit. Y’all know it’s that time of year. Where macaroni and cheese is a completely acceptable food choice, often times mandatory, with no questions asked. Calories and carb concerns are thrown *out of the window*. (Even for me and y’all know how strict I am with my diet!) . There are many restaurants in Japan that are relative unknowns outside of the small local foodiest circles and Comptoir Feu is definitely one of them. It’s not on any “list” nor does it have any stars or medals. On Tabelog, its score is shown as a 3.60 but that’s due to downward-adjustments for the lack of reviews submitted - the average given score of those nine reviewers is a 4.59. This also points to the fact that the restaurant is very hard to access even for the elite Tabelog reviewers, given its membership only policy. . So it’s hard to get into and it’s fairly unknown; does it mean it’s any good? Are you fcuking kidding me? It’s on my top five list. . Chef Sato is like an artist. I can’t think of any other place that offers masterful dishes as his and I would go as far as saying that his level of creativity is rivaled by only a handful of chefs. He has a French background but his cooking mixes French and Japanese as well as Italian and Chinese at times. .
