[Using regressions as drop sets in body weight training] โ € โ € Body weight exercises like callisthenics or gymnastics is a fantastic and fun way to build strength and muscle, but sometimes taking a certain muscle group to failure can be tricky given that, for the most part, you're working multiple muscle groups at once. โ € โ € That's where drops sets and regressions can be very useful. Basically the idea is you start with a very challenging exercise first, then once you hit fatigue and can't do any more reps of that once, switch to a slightly easier version of that exercise and do a few more reps. You can continue to regress like this as much as you want until you hit total failure or until you hit the desired amount of total reps. โ € โ € Here's an example:โ € โ € Goal is 20 pushup reps total โ € Say you do 5 archer pushups each arm then fatigue (thats 10)โ € Then you switch to planche pushups for another 5โ € Finally you finish with 5 normal pushups โ € โ € It's a great way to take an exercise you might be able to do a lot of reps on and make it more beneficial for strength and muscle gain.โ € โ € #gayfitness #gaypersonaltrainer #gaymelbourne #fitness #workouts

Meet Alex. He is in the film industry and operates a lot of heavy cameras and equipment. He first came to me with right shoulder and elbow pain. He saw two separate doctors and was told he needed steroid shots or surgery. I assessed his situation and saw that he had faulty movement patterns in addition to shoulder weakness. After teaching him proper scapular (shoulder blade) engagement and how to strengthen the rotator cuff properly and effectively, we went into shoulder movement patterns and focused on function which also resulted in a change in his form. All this with postural corrective exercises, Alex is now able to perform his job pain-free with tools to self manage his own care. . . Prior to this, Alex was unable to workout without his shoulder pain flaring up. He now has a program he can perform at home (without a gym) or on the road without any issues. . . Here you see Alex working on wrist strengthening as push ups can be tough on his wrists. He starts on all fours and proceeds to push his knuckles down into the ground hard enough to lift up the heel of his palms off the floor. After a set, grounding the entire palm back down, he'll lean forwards as far as he can to get a forearm stretch. He repeats this superset for 8-10 reps, 3 sets. . . Good job, Alex!
