Under the leadership of #GiovanniGiolitti
for most of the 1900-15 era Italy experienced substantial #economicexpansion
but also #educationalreforms
as the middle class expanded, #factoryregulation
as the state became active, more liberal trade union laws. The trade unions became easier to operate in more industrialized areas of Italy. There was also less government censorship, which is always representative of a state that is modernizing and expanding. This legislation culminated in the granting of near universal #suffrage
in 1912, Italian women would not receive the right to vote until after 1945. Another major positive gain was the lifting of the Papal Ban on participating in Italian Political life leading in 1913 to the founding of a Catholic Political Party the Populare Party.
Italian Political Corruption
These pre-war positive developments were unfortunately counter balanced by the continued recognized corruption in Italian politics especially elections and what happened after elections. There was also the radicalization of power voices on the right who espoused #Nationalist
policies and on the left with Radical #Socialists
. In particular what many of these advocates shared was the violence of their language and the uncompromising nature of their programs whether it was the popular figure of #GabrieleDanunnzio
on the right or a young #BenitoMussolini
on the left. Benito Mussolini began his career as a radical socialists anti-nationalist who during the Italian War against Tripoli in 1911 was against Italian nationalism or imperialism before doing an abrupt about face and calling Italian expansion and intervention during the Great War. By the end of the Mussolini was a National Populist Fascists.
