On Monday we welcomed some of the descendants of our class of 1919 back to campus. Librarian April Lynne Earle spent months researching the Class of 1919 and tracking down family members. One of the guests who came to the dinner was very young when his father, our alumnus, died. He knew little of his father, and nothing of his father's time at Farmingdale. He said, "April introduced me to my father." Here are the descendants standing in front of Ward Hall. . . . . #greenleylibrary #farmingdalestatecollege #fsc #fsccentennialcountdown #classof1919 #library #library 📚 #fscrams #librariansofinstagram #librariesofinstagram #archives #archivistsofinstagram #genealogy #geneaologist #genealogistsofinstagram

Photobomb⁣ In 2003 Dad and I watch Scotland play France in the Rugby World Cup in Sydney. We have this photo remembering a fun night out...and I always laugh when I see the guy behind us and wonder what face he was pulling! 🤣⁣ ⁣ ⁣ And yes...with close Scottish ancestors, we were clearly supporting Scotland but regardless ... I honestly love watching a good game more than any one team. Although in this case the scoreline was France 51 Scotland 9, the night was memorable with a carnival atmosphere and good natured crowd. Ye auld alliance is still strong....⁣ ⁣ #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogistsofinstagram #genealogyphotoaday#genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature#familyhistoryoninstagram #myancestors#scotland #scott #scotlandrugby #rugbyworldcup

⁣ Flowers⁣ For over 10 years our family ran a florist in Armidale (NSW, Australia). Although it looks like I was part of the team, I really only ever helped out on busy days. It was the hard work of Mum and two of my sisters (and our good friend Lipa) that built up the business. Family businesses don't come without oceans of blood, sweat and tears. Nothing is ever handed to you. ⁣ ⁣ While it was sad to leave the business, it was time for new adventures and in 2014 Mum sold to family friends and our family moved to the UK. One of my sisters is still a florist but the rest of the family have moved on to other things. All the same, I can't help but admire a florist when I walk past a shop and remember all the work that goes in behind the scenes. ⁣ ⁣ I often wonder where our family got their love of gardening and flowers from. Dad's side I know, but Mum's talent....I'm not so sure yet. I must do some more digging (pardon the pun...)⁣ ⁣ #genealogistsofinstagram #genealogyphotoaday#genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature #myancestors#familyhistorian #whoareyou #smallbusiness

Z is for Zadues A strange name. A madeup name. In 1847 Hannah Buckingham (a distant aunt), married William Jaques. Both were silk weavers from Foleshill near Coventry. Both left their 'mark' on the wedding certificate which likely means they were illiterate. By 1881, the family appear to have separated. In the 1881 census, Hannah is still married and living with a number of her children, but they are all lodgers with an unmarried Silk Weaver in Bethnal Green. In the census record however, their names appear as Zadues rather than Jaques (compare the J for Joseph and the Z in their surname). Almost every record I have found for them has a slightly different spelling. This is a really good example of how strong regional accents in England worked, along with illiteracy, to change the spelling of names over time. I can imagine some enumerator in London listening to this family and making his best guess at their name; and them having no clue what it was he wrote down. #findmypast #wdytya #ancestry #ancestryuk #myheritage #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords #genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #research #researcher #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #fortheloveofgenealogy #ilovesearchingforancestors #familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram #familysearch #myancestors #familytree #familysleuth #familyhistorian #coventry #buckingham
Y is for Young⁣ ⁣ Ahhh yes....that time we had the cool big tree tracing us back to royalty. This was part of my attempt many years ago to work it all out... but instead of being related to Royalty I found a lot of dead ends. It turns out that without proper records, Victorian's just liked to make things up to gain some respectability! ⁣ ⁣ In any case, my claim to royalty is gone as the Youngs from Leny Castle are no longer blood relatives now! However they are still a colourful part of the 'old' family tree and include a healthy smattering of navy captains and even a link to an Australian explorer. ⁣ ⁣ #findmypast #wdytya #ancestry #ancestryuk #myheritage#genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords#genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #research#researcher #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto#gpad #familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram#familysearch #findyourroots #myfamilysecrets #myancestors #familytree #familyhistorian #whoareyou#ancestrydnaresults
H E R O // Not all heroes wear capes! And I’m sure this person who helped me was not wearing one when they took this picture for me. This is a pic of my great-great grandfather’s grave on my GERMAN side. Yeah das right, I’m part German. Anyways, I’ve been dying to know where he was buried. I found his grave at a cemetery in Pearl City, HI called Sunset Memorial through FindAGrave Index but with no photo. I sent out the request to have someone take a pic for me and one man came through! I’ve been researching my German ancestors for quite some time. They came to Hawaiʻi to settle the Lutheran Church AND work on the sugar plantation. They married some Hawaiians and a few generations later, here I am 💪🏾 My point of today’s post is to ask you to be a hero! Every little thing we do in family history is a heroic act to someone somewhere. Keep indexing, y’all! Keep writing in your journal! Keep volunteering to help someone out! Go to the temple with family names! Take pics of a gravesite for a stranger! Keep taking photos of your kids or scanning photos from your grandparents. Just keep doing your thang and it WILL bless someone somewhere! #polynesia #polynesian #thepolynesiangenealogist #miyajensen #genealogy #familyhistory #genealogists #genealogistsofinstagram #familyhistorian
W is for Whinwell⁣ ⁣ In 1932 when Grandad was about 3 years old, his mother left him at this childrens home in Stirling. It wasn't a big home and by all accounts it was quite good...as far as childrens homes go. I have read accounts of others who lived there around the time grandad did and it seemed quite nice. ⁣ ⁣ I know that grandad had family nearby, but his records show that his mother never visited him. When he reached 10 years he was too old for Whinwell and they sent him away to the Quarrier Homes in Bridge of Weir near Glasgow. Only a year later he was on a ship bound for Australia. It must have been a lot for a little chap to deal with. ⁣ ⁣ If you have family who grew up in poverty or a bad situation it's awful for them but almost a blessing for a family historian as there will often be plenty of records. When the government and/or money are involved, there is bound to be a paper trail. Always look at all the resources. Whinwell's annual report often had pictures of the kids. There is a photo of the kids at the beach one year and you can clearly make out grandad's smiling face. It's the only picture we have of him as a little boy. ⁣ ⁣ #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords#genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #research#researcher #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto#gpad #gpad_feature #fortheloveofgenealogy#ilovesearchingforancestors #familyhistory#familyhistoryoninstagram #familysearch #findyourroots#traceyourroots #myancestors #familysleuth #familyhistorian #whoareyou #scotland #stirling #scott#wiggetts #whinwell #whinwellhomes ⁣ ⁣

U is for Uralla⁣ ⁣ Uralla is just one of the many places I have called home in my time. But this was our family home growing up for nearly 20 years. It is the old Station Masters House in Uralla and we were the first 'non-railway' people to own it. We loved that place, but all good things must come to an end. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad#gpad_feature #genealogy #genealogyresearch#genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram#familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram#myancestors #uralla #armidale #sra
T is for teething⁣ ⁣ Something we tend to take for granted these days is teething (although not when you have a kid going through it of course!!!). But spare a thought for kids back in the days before teething gels and pain killers. ⁣ ⁣ This is the death certificate for my Great Great Uncle - Henry Scott in August 1910. It's a little hard to read but he died at 1 year old 'probably from Dentition Convulsive Fit'. ⁣ ⁣ A quick search on the internet for 'Dentition' reveals that it is teething and was apparently a common cause of death for children. Little ones would sometimes be given animal milk to drink that was contaminated or of course unrefrigerated, and this would give them an infection that lead to death in the days before antibiotics. Sometimes the treatments and powders themselves did more harm than good. ⁣ ⁣ I can't even imagine how horrific that would have been for everyone in the family. ⁣ ⁣ #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature #findmypast #wdytya #ancestry #ancestryuk #myheritage #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords #genealogist #familyhistory #genealogistsofinstagram #research #researcher#familyhistoryoninstagram #scott #wiggetts
R is for Rosemerin⁣ ⁣ This is the home Mum and Dad lived in when I was born, and also the home my Grandparents were in when my Dad was born. It is near Orange in NSW, Australia (a few hours west of Sydney). Decades ago when my parents started their first nursery business (that later became @rosemerin_florist ) the name was a nod the happy memories in this old place. ⁣ ⁣ We visited a few times when we were kids and the house was still owned by family (although not always lived in I don't think). I even remember staying a few times. It had a big old farm shed that was full of old cars and all sorts of treasures - I often wonder what happened to it and if there really were any treasures in that old shed or it was just my imagination! The stone house was quite old and dated from the mid 1800's maybe? The building at the rear had a loft (I think) that scared me when i was a kid but my Edgecombe cousins lived there so I figured it couldn't be too scary (even if they were older and braver than me!). ⁣ ⁣ I often wonder what happened to that old place...and through the marvels of the interweb I have just realised that the old place lives on (and I think is still owned by distant family) @rosemerin_oateslane. And it seems the old shed might now house a winery! I knew it was full of treasure! ❤️🍷❤️🍷⁣ ⁣ #genealogy #genealogistsofinstagram#genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature #iamnextgen #onfleekfamilyhistory#fortheloveofgenealogy #ilovesearchingforancestors #familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram#findyourroots #myancestors #familysleuth #familyhistorian #whoareyou #edgecombe #rosemerin #orange ⁣ ⁣
P is for Pearl Sheller My GG Grandad, John Anderson, was a Pearl Diver in the Torres Strait Islands of far north Australia. He and some of his brothers worked together and lived on Prince of Wales Island not far from Thursday Island. They were all from Denmark and there was quite a little Scandinavian community there for several decades. The island is remote even by today's standards - I can't imagine the adventures they must have all had at the turn of the last century! This is his marriage to Christina Christophersen on 21 February 1894. The witness to the wedding is Neils Christian Andersen, John's brother and business partner in the pearling business. The pearl shells at the time were worth a small fortune - like the gold mines of Victoria. They were used back in Europe and America to make buttons, cutlery, and fine inlays for equipment like compasses. When the market declined in the early 1900's, some of the family went back to Denmark with the pearls and pearl shells as gifts that are still kept by some of the distant family. When we met our new Danish cousin last year he told us he had seen some when he was a boy and had a book on the families history. Some of the family of course stayed in Australia...but moved to Sydney, and these are my ancestors now. #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords #genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #research #researcher #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature #ilovesearchingforancestors #familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram #familysearch #findyourroots #snodgrass #andersen #christophersen #pearlers #pearldiver #princeofwalesisland #torresstrait
O is for Orange Whenever I would tell people I was born in Orange I always get a funny look - "You were born in an Orange?" they'd ask. No, not AN Orange...the PLACE Orange... Orange is a country town a few hours west of Sydney. My parents moved there after they were married and Dad worked on the orchards. It is a cold climate place (yes...a few such places exist in Australia!) with snow in winter. It was snowing the day I was born too and I always says that the reason I am a cold climate girl! M is for Marion After my 'E is Edgecombe' post, I was asked how little Marion died and I was ashamed to say that I didn't know! Sometimes we get all caught up looking at those people we are directly related to and we forget those little ones that unfortunately died too young. So I went on to the GRO and ordered a PDF of little Marions death certificate. A few days later the certificate arrived - I love the new PDF service! The family were living in Tiverton at the time and dear little Marion died of Diphtheria. By all accounts little Marion was an absolute sweetie and her older siblings doted on her. The family was devastated when she died so young. 'Little Marion' was called that as Marion was her mum's name (although she was really Annie Marion, everyone called her Marion!). Little Marion's older brother Henry named his oldest daughter (my granny) Marion in memory of his much loved little sister and own mother. #GRO #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords #genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #research #researcher #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #ilovesearchingforancestors #familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram #myancestors #devon #edgecombe

J is for Jervis Bay The Jervis Bay is not just a picturesque part of the Australian coastline, but also the name of the ship that brought my Grandad from Britain to Australia. This picture was taken May 1934 in King George V Dock in London. Five years later, in May 1939, Grandad was one of 17 children who arrived in Freemantle, Western Australia on the Jervis Bay. The children were sent from the Quarrier home in Bridge of Weir near Glasgow, to Burnside Homes in Parramatta, Sydney. Grandad was only 10 years old and told he was going on a holiday. It would be many decades before he made it back to Scotland - a country he felt had abandoned him. Nonetheless, he would talk fondly of the sea voyage. On the boat he said the sailors were lovely to the kids and gave them treats and let them see all over the boat. He remembers foreign ports and long days in the ocean. In his retirement he made many model ships with his own craftmanship and rarely anything more than a picture from a book. The Jervis Bay would later be used during WWII and is famous for what was essentially a suicide charge against a German battleship. The Jervis Bay was the sole escort for a convoy of unarmed ships with supplies sailing from Canada to Britain. After instructing the convoy to scatter under the cover of smoke, the Jervis Bay sailed straight at the Battleship with guns blazing - it's shells not even within range of the battleship before it was sunk. Surviving crew members were picked up by a convoy boat who had stayed nearby and saw events unfold. . #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords #genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature #familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram #myancestors #familytree #scotland #scott #jervisbay #hmsjervisbay #britishhomechildren #britishhomechild #quarriersvillage #quarriers #williamquarrier #burnsidehome

I for Isabella⁣ ⁣ Isabella Wiggetts Scott was my Great Granny. She was born in Stirling in 1905 to John Scott and Isabella Wiggetts. Although they say they are married on this birth record (and her two older siblings certificates) there is no record of the marriage. Later records show that sadly the family was well known to the police and local authorities and I have various records saying they were unmarried. ⁣ ⁣ The 'marriage' breaks down when the children are very young and there is a sad story of them all ending up in the Stirling Industrial School until they came of age. Their mother married (but not bigamously) and I cannot confirm where their father ended up. ⁣ ⁣ By all accounts the siblings were close and even lived with their mother for a time when they left the Industrial School.⁣ ⁣ Don't always believe everything that is written on a record though. If there is something not quite right with the rest of your research then look for other reasons and use a range of sources - in this case poor law records and the local newspapers. Maybe one day I will find a record that hasn't yet been digitised I guess....but then Isabella will be bigamous!?⁣ ⁣ ⁣ #ancestry #ancestryuk #genealogy #genealogyresearch#genealogyrecords #genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #research #researcher#genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature #onfleekfamilyhistory #genealogists#fortheloveofgenealogy #ilovesearchingforancestors#familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram #familysearch#scotland #stirling #scott #wiggetts

H is for Headstone This is St Kilda Cemetery in Melbourne. I visited when I was back in Australia over the summer. When I arrived I looked at the map and worked out roughly where the graves should be for the family. After a good while searching a quiet back corner of the cemetery (and panicking I'd stumble across a sleeping tiger snake), I realised that I was in the entirely wrong section! Me....the drafter and town planner, had read the map the wrong way around. In my defense though...the north point was DOWN the page which is map making lunacy! Anyhow, with time slipping away before I had to get to the airport, I hurried to the opposite side of the cemetery and raced around searching the headstones for relatives. The one in the foreground is the one I was particularly keen to find. Lydia and Joseph Damyon were my GGGrandparents. She died young and I think it was maybe that event which led to her daughter getting into trouble and ending up in Sydney as a single mother with .my GGranny. But that, as they say, is a story for another day. #familyhistoryfriday #findmypast #wdytya #ancestry #ancestryuk #myheritage #genealogy #genealogyresearch #genealogyrecords #genealogist #genealogistsofinstagram #genealogistonholidays #genealogyphotoaday #genealogyphoto #gpad #gpad_feature #fortheloveofgenealogy #ilovesearchingforancestors #familyhistory #familyhistoryoninstagram #familysleuth #melbourne #stkilda #stkildacemetery #damyon
F is for Ferguson ⁣ . ⁣ The Ferguson family left London and traveled to Melbourne, Australia in 1877. A distant cousin sent me this transcribed version of the diary my GGG Grandfather wrote on the journey. ⁣ . ⁣ He traveled with his wife Rosetta and three children Lydia (my GG Granny), Albert and Florence. It has been a while since I read the story (must put that on the 'to do' list) but I do remember that Rosetta and the kids spent most of the journey in the cabin very seasick. 😔 And I think Charles must have had a lot of time on his hands because I also remember there being commentary on the scandalous behaviour of some of the other travellers! 😏⁣ . ⁣ I would love to see the original document one day. I have photos of other stories written by family members in beautiful swirly writing - it seems there were a few amateur writers in the family! Apparently, the books and notes were all saved in a big old chest in a shed by a distant cousin. Unbeknown to everyone, it had a leak and many of the books and diaries were damaged. On the left in a white blouse is his older sister Minda and her husband Hubert Ball. They remained in England when most of the rest of the family emigrated to Australia which always makes me a little sad and reminds me of how our family is once again split across the oceans. We're not sure who the other two in the back row are. ⁣ . ⁣ In the front row is G.Grandad's younger siblings and his mother. L-R is Gertrude May (May), Mary Georgina (Ena), Annie Marion (nee Buckingham), Frederick Charles and then 'Little Marion' who my own Granny was named after. ⁣ .⁣ Little Marion sadly died in July 1922 aged 4 so this photo must have been taken not long before she passed away judging by how old she is. Just across the road from the building in my last post is this more modern structure. Not my most favourite building in Hatton Garden. • Anyway ... this part of Hatton Garden used to be part of Charles Street, and in 1825 at 7 Charles Street Elizabeth Siddal was born. She later became famous as the wife of Dante Rosetti and was a painter and poet in her own right. She was also a model used by many of the pre-raphaelite painters and is easily recognisable by her flowing redhair. • The family story is that we are related to her through her siblings (she never had children). Yet another family mystery to crack one day... • #familyhistoryfriday #familyhistory #genealogy #genealogistsofinstagram #familyhistorymystery #familyhistoryoninstagram #hattongarden #elizabethsiddal #preraphaelite #famousfamily #challengeaccepted
Does anyone else have the same laugh as their mom/dad/sibling/grandparents/cousins? Our high pitched laugh from my mom’s side of the family is affectionately called the “Kalama Cackle.” It’s true. It sounds like a cackle. 😂 But I’m grateful that good laughs come from those I love and that our specific laughter sound is passed down from generation after generation 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦🤗 Grandma has it, Mom and Aunties have it, Uncles and cousins have it, and now I have it. Maybe our laugh is the same laugh as our ancestors from 100 years ago? Idk 😬 but you never know! For those who are new to the page, WELCOME! I’m Miya (mee-yuh) and I am a genealogist. And I specifically do Polynesian research. I’d love if there were more people, especially YOUNG BLOODS (like me) in the genealogy field. Maybe that person is YOU 💪🏾 ✨I’ll be posting more research tips, my genealogy adventures, and some EXCITING new things I’m doing this year! Thank you for your love and support!!! MERRY [day after] CHRISTMAS! I intended to post this yesterday, but the day was too wonderful to step away and make it happen. My grandfather, Charles Elmus Brady, spent Christmas 1918 in Blenod, France. This menu/program shows how the soldiers of Company A, 115th Engineers celebrated Christmas 100 years ago. The “Chow” menu includes dishes with cleverly altered names representing the atmosphere of the world they knew at the time. The program ends with the “Latest Bluebird” which tells the 115th Engineers that they would be home before next Christmas. While I imagine that announcement was more for morale than anything else, it would become a true statement. Sadly, 100 years later, soldiers all over the world continue to celebrate their holidays in the same manner. I wish them all peace and love and pray that they have celebrated their last Christmas away from home. Wherever you are, and however you celebrate [or don’t] during the holidays, I hope this post finds you happy and FREE. I hope you have the desire to make the world around you better - even in the tiniest of ways - every kind action has the potential to change someone for the better. That someone may be you! Kindness is infectious, it has the ability to spread and will only stop when our efforts do. May the last week of 2018 be blessed and be the jumpstart of a beautiful 2019. ⭐️I’d also like to take the time to explain my absence over the past couple of months... October is Family History Month and I offered a special for that month. I had NO IDEA how many clients that would bring me and it was fantastic! However, I also had no idea the impact it would have on my social media presence. My clients come first and I had to step back from regular postings to devote my time to them. I have mad respect for those of you who are able to balance both. #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogy #familyhistory #whoareyou #1918 #ww1 #115thengineers #charleselmusbrady #blenod #france #blenodfrance #genealogistsofinstagram #genealogicalresearcher #familysleuth #historian #benice #maketheworldabetterplace #spreadkindness #merrychristmas
I do love rainy days and working from home (sometimes the 9-5 job is ok 😉) although i wish i had time to stop @nationalarchivesuk on my way through kew! #genealogisttorture 😭 • Ps. It looks like water is actually flowing from the tower at @londonmuseumofwaterandsteam today. • #familyhistory #genealogy #genealogistsofinstagram #nationalarchives #wishiwasthere #london #londonhistory #londonmuseum
October was quite a busy month so I've been a bit quiet sorry. But as we finally seem to be getting into Autumn here in #London I feel like it's about time to get searching and blogging and writing and posting...again 😊 HAPPY FRIDAY 🍂🍁🍂🍁 #familyhistory #genealogy #ilovefriday #fmp #autumn #familyhistoryfriday #familyhistoryoninstagram #genealogistsofinstagram
Now on the blog, the story of my 2nd great uncle Lester Sanford, who survived the sinking of his ship in WW1, only to have another sad cause of death. #tuscania #worldwar1 #history #greatwar
I think I must be about 8yrs old in this picture. Mum made the lovely smock dress for me. ▪ Both mum and my paternal grandmother are excellent at sewing. Sadly the needlework genes missed me completely! I'd be better off drawing a picture of the sewing machine than using it! 🤣 ▪ (P.s. So glad i grew up to be a rabbit...check out those front teeth! 😨) ▪ #genealogy #familyhistory #smocking #thingsmymummade #genealogistsofinstagram #geneabloggers #icantsew
41 years ago tonight, @aerosmith played their first of two scheduled nights at the Philadelphia Spectrum. . As the band prepared to begin their first encore, a firecracker was thrown from the crowd to the stage injuring @iamstevent and @joeperryofficial. . Their injuries were treated and they were released from the hospital that night. However, the show scheduled for the following night was cancelled. . 📰 @newspaperscom @phillyinquirer 11 October 1977 #aerosmith #joeperry #steventyler #philadelphia #philadelphiainquirer #1977 #newspapersdotcom #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram
I’m proud to say I did it, I found the surname of Veronica’s mother. Veronica’s only living relative is her first cousin Eva. Eva and Veronicas mother’s were sisters. This is Eva’s marriage license showing her mothers maiden name, which would be the same for Veronica’s mother. . This all came about because a woman and her husband did the kindest thing by giving a lonely, destitute woman a loving home for her final seven years. They only have her best interests in mind even to the point of making sure her mothers name was included on her death certificate. . There really are nice people amongst us. Imagine if the whole world had a heart like this. . Oh, and I absolutely love my job! . #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram #petlanova #czechrepublic
Thank you to all who contacted me to help with translating. . The woman in the photo is Veronica’s 85 year old “Babicka” or grandmother. The note on the back, addressed to her “Dear Verusee” (a nickname for Veronika or Vera) speaks about how she prays daily for her granddaughter and family. . Unfortunately, the translation gave little aid to finding Veronica’s mother’s name. . #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram #babicka #babička #pilsenczechrepublic #pilsenczech #czechrepublic #85
Her name was Veronica. Wasn’t she beautiful? My client tells me she was just as beautiful inside. . Veronica, a widow, never had children. She was sadly taken advantage of by those who were supposed to be acting in her best interests and was being evicted with her life savings gone. My client, Veronica’s former neighbor, along with her husband took Veronica in and blessed her with a loving home. . Veronica passed away recently, at the age of 93. Dementia had robbed her of her memory and she was unable to remember her mother’s name. . I was hired to locate the name of Veronica’s mother for her death certificate. Veronica’s only living relative also suffers from dementia and has forgotten names as well. Some research projects really tug at my heart strings. This is one of those projects. . #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram
As I (im)patiently wait for a response from Alice and Freddie’s family, I continued to research for more information on them. . If I’m correct, Alice is Alice Elnora Jenne, born in 1903 in Texas. She was raised in Colorado which is where she likely met her future husband, Clyne Frederick Garland. . The large photo is from a Boulder, Colorado yearbook in 1921 and says it’s Alice Jenne. I have no doubt that this is the Alice Jenne from the family I reached out to. . Unfortunately, I think they look nothing alike. My heart dropped when I first saw it. . What is your opinion? Things to consider: . 1. The photos were taken in 1921 and 1931. Is aging a factor here? . 2. How much could make up and the colors added affect ones appearance? . My gut tells me this is not the same woman. I’d love to hear your thoughts! . #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram #aliceelnorajenne #alicegarland #freddygarland #freddiegarland #1921 #1931 #bouldercolorado #berkelycalifornia
UPDATE: I’m hoping that the couple I contacted are who I think they are. If so, Freddy and Alice will be going home to live with Freddy’s son and family. . Two of my favorite things: coffee and genealogy! Happy #nationalcoffeeday ☕️ . What’s your favorite coffee? I’m partial to what my husband makes. He’s diligent about making sure the coffee is made the night before so no one has to suffer without first thing in the morning. . On the rare occasions I make it, I add ground cinnamon to the coffee grounds and it is SO GOOD! Give it a try! . Back to client work today once my coffee kicks in. What do you have planned today? If it’s an historic district, I’m there... . Folsom, California on a Sunday ~ tranquil, yet busy and entertaining. I’m the mother of two boys (well, men now) so these pictures struck a wonderful chord with me. How many of us have stared at our little one and thought they could not be any more perfect? This is a new mother who is clearly in love with her son. These photos tugged at my heartstrings and I couldn’t leave them behind. . Purchased at a wonderful antique store in Folsom, California, Alice and Freddy/Freddie are the latest additions to my collection of Orphaned Photos (entire collection at jamistoneking.com). My goal is to reunite them with family, however, the vague information, (presumably written by Alice), gives me very little to go on. But, I’m up for the challenge! . ❗️Edit: I just noticed that although the photos were clearly taken at the same sitting, the boys name is spelled differently on each photo and his age is different also. #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram #boymom #aliceandfreddy #aliceandfreddie #motherandson #1931 #folsomcalifornia
“Cousin George? Part 3” is up! (Link in bio). . This week’s research literally consumed me. 128 years ago yesterday, my grandfather, Charles Elmus Brady was born in Hermosa, Colorado. Soon after, the family moved Golden, Colorado. Charlie spent his youth in Golden. He played baseball for Golden High School. His love for baseball was passed onto my father who would then pass that love onto the rest of us. . It was in Golden that he registered for the WWI draft. The war would take him far from home. He visited wonderful places, while witnessing unimaginable horror. . His parents relocated to Grand Junction on the western slope of Colorado while he was overseas. Upon his return, he would meet, fall in love and eventually marry my grandmother in 1920. . By the early 1930’s, arthritis had completely ravaged Charlie’s body and he was bound to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. The “deforming arthritis” (per his death certificate) was attributed to harsh weather conditions and the damp, wet trenches he spent extended periods of time in. Because of this, the US Army would support Charlie, his wife and three children until his death in San Diego, California in 1938. I wonder if the same diagnosis would be given today? . Although I was born nearly 30 years after his death, I’ve spent the last 20 years “getting to know” him. I see nothing but my daddy’s face in his. His many letters sent home during the war are priceless treasures. His penmanship is identical to my dad’s (who was 11 when Charlie died). I find that to be a very interesting trait that was clearly inherited. . I often wonder how life would have been for my father and his sisters who suffered so much loss at such a young age (their mother passed 10 months after Charlie died). . With the passing of my 94 year aunt this year, for the first time in 80 years, this little family of five are all together once again. . #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram #happybirthday #128yearsold #hermosacolorado #goldencolorado #ww1 #grandjunctioncolorado #sandiegoca
Harrison Eugene Havens (“H.E.”) was born in Franklin County, Ohio on 15 December 1837. He isn’t necessarily my favorite ancestor (I can’t choose!), but he is certainly one of my favorites to research. Because of his terms in Congress, his part in making Oklahoma a state, and his move to Cuba (where he died 16 August 1916), there is a lot of great documentation out there. . . His son, Benjamin Franklin (“B.F.”) Havens (my great grandfather) painted H.E. in a terrible light to his children. They were raised to believe that H.E. had abandoned his wife to begin a new life in Cuba with another woman. I proved early on in my career that that was completely false and was basically the pot calling the kettle black. . . #myfavoriteancestor #genealogyphotoaday #jamistonekinggenealogist #genealogist #professionalgenealogist #genealogy #genealogical #research #researcher #traceyourroots #familytree #familytreeresearch #familytreeresearcher #familysleuth #familyhistorian #familyhistory #preserveyourfamilyhistory #whoareyou #genealogistsofinstagram
