TRAINER THOUGHTS! 💭 Fellow trainer @coachleeboyce had a post earlier this week on exercise selection and sticking with what works. “I don’t care about the science. I just care about it SAFELY delivering a result. Given it does, I’m good.” I couldn’t agree more and wanted to share my thoughts on the subject. **Side note, if you aren’t following him already, make sure ya do! Great content on getting stronger and staying pain free. KISS (keep it simple stupid) with exercise choice with client programming. Increased challenge and complexity does not always mean better exercise. I have nothing against new exercises that offer an additional challenge but only if its warranted AND the client’s skill level is matched. You need to have requisite strength before you can add an extra challenge to stability. Stick to what works and keeps the client safe, and coming back for more. Highlights from yesterday’s lower body session: Swipe for more.. . Box jumps and hanging leg raises ( not shown) Practicing yet getting back into performing the clean + jerk. Have been performing clean variations whenever I can in workouts due to a busy schedule. Followed that up with some Trap bar deadlifts, Step ups, Blackburn’s (upper back mobility) high rep band hip thrusts for the glute pump🍑😉. Strong powerful glutes goes a long way for performance and everyday life. Ladies and gents never neglect strength training the lower body. You can burn a lot of calories when doing so. Especially if your goal is weight loss/ fat loss or just generally trying to develop a leaner muscular physique. . Step ups are a great exercise for developing strength and stability on the single leg. They primarily target the quadriceps (quads) muscle along with the glutes, hamstrings and calfs. There are many variations of the step up which I have wrote about on previous posts. I like to sprinkle them in my own workouts as well as clients every now and then. . One that I am performing in my own workouts at the moment is a step up with a balance component or a hip 90/90 isometric/ pause at the top for 1-2 secs. Which increases the intensity and creates a bigger challenge. Effective for developing symmetry, balance and control while under load. Also great for working on any lower body imbalances you may have. This can be a good progression if you have mastered traditional step ups. . 1️⃣Keep it at just your bodyweight for the first 1-2 sets. If you find it easy then add some dumbbells and take it from there. 2️⃣Focus on bracing/tightening your core/ trunk as you drive that knee up to hip height and pause. 3️⃣ Perform 3-4 sets of 8-10 reps each leg with a 1-2 sec pause. . You can program this exercise after or even before your main lower body strength exercise on your leg day or add them in as part of a full body strength workout. Which is how I mainly program them for the busy client. I like to include them in a plan for at least 3-4 weeks while increasing intensity/load each week. . Bit of a late evening simple dinner. Thought I would have some brown rice for a change. All natural Peach barbecue sauce by paleochef used to marinate Ground turkey with a couple handfuls of spinach, 1 chopped Persian cucumber 🥒 along with half an 🥑 and some of my favorite all natural maple mustard dressing also by paleochef @stevespaleogoods. Meal to keep you satisfied and content 😊 . I like and always will recommend having all macronutrients carbs, fats and protein in your daily/weekly nutrition plan so you are satisfied during and after you eat. However, the amount of macronutrients you have will differ depending on your goal. There will be some tweaks here and there with what you will actually eat. Nothing to the extreme as I personally don’t like to completely exclude one macronutrient they all work well in conjunction with one another. It’s also the quality of the nutrients that really count as well. . . If you really wanna improve your nutrition, health as well as your fitness in a more sustainable way. “He Doc I have one leg longer than the other. Is that normal?” No it’s not normal for the majority. Sometimes just activating the psoas can help realign those legs. Today I got the opportunity to show my client how simple it is. I’m so proud of her. #ageisjustanumber The position she is in is the simplest position to be in to keep the lower back deactivates. You just hug your knee, take a deep breath in, and then exhale as you try pushing your knee away (resist the push of course)
3 Count Pause Bench (4 X 6 at ~75%) Pause bench replicates comp bench press as well as targetting the weakness of pressing off the chest. Use this in your program to develop good starting strength from the bottom of your lifts.

Fuel for the mind and body.💪🏾 . Simple lunch from earlier today. Wild caught mackerel fillets @belabrandseafood . Purple sweet potatoes 🍠, colorful cauliflower and some blueberries, kiwi. Even though I have a bit of a crazy schedule nowadays. I still will always put good nutrients in my body. Being in my forties health and longevity is a top priority. I’m constantly experimenting and consuming low inflammatory foods as well foods that help me to stay focused and perform at my best every day. You can to!! .
