When it comes to bar mounts, we are often asked, Which is better.. bar muscle up or glide kip? Which should I learn first? Should I learn them both at the same time? Here is my wrap up of the two skills, neither is better but they are different. They are used for different purposes and there is a chance you will find one easier. The bar muscle up, uses a superman > hollow transition to create momentum and generally the movement path is VERTICAL. It is an extension of the pull up, so it requires lots of pulling strength to get over the bar. It also has a definitive start and end point, starts with elbows locked out in the hang, ends with elbows locked out at the top of the dip. It is most commonly used in CrossFit and its purpose is to accumulate reps and test pulling and grip endurance during workouts. The glide kip is a traditional gymnastics bar mount. It allows the athlete to use leverage to get from under the bar to ontop of it. It requires spatial awareness, timing, core strength and straight arm strength. It is meant to look graceful and effortless. Its purpose is to act as a "connecting" tool for displaying other skills. That is why it doesn't come to a definitive stop at the top of the bar. You could connect it into a cast + dismount. Cast to handstand. Cast to back hip circle. Should you learn one at a time or both at the same time? I suggest just one at a time. This is so that you dont confuse your swing timing during your practice. Get yourself to a level a confidence with one of the skills, then move on to the next one. Are glide kips allowed in CrossFit competitions? No. There are normally some very clear standards like, toes cannot go over the bar and you must go through a portion of a dip. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't learn how to use leverage to get over the bar, you can learn how to use a combination of the two. If you watch most high level athletes, they all do it this way to stay efficient and relaxed. Connecting Bar Muscle-Ups requires steady & controlled movement through hollow and arch positions. ••• The first step in learning to connect your muscle-ups is slowing the movement down, focusing on a smooth swing under the bar. ••• How To: . ✅1. After you land in the front support (at the top of your first MU), bend your arms until your rib cage makes contact with the bar. . ✅2. | GLIDE KIP WEEK | ….. ▪️Today’s drill focuses on building two things: 1) The “swing” during the first portion of the #glidekip . 2) Hip flexor and straight arm strength needed for parts 2&3 of the kip (the compression & pull around the support). ...... 🔑 KEY POINTS: 1. Start with arms extended & hollow body position. 2. As you pick feet up & pull into a hollow keep arms extended. 3. Extended to a slight open hip at front of skill. 4. Pull down and back on bar as you return to start (this is the most challenging part!). . 🔸FAULTS 1. Pulling into bar as you swing to open position. 2. Not engaging lats by pulling down on rig as you begin to swing. 3. Forgetting to squeeze core 4. #MOVEBETTERMONDAY - When learning gymnastics skills, try not to think of the whole skill at once. Think of component parts. Small sections you can hit perfectly at the perfect time. THEN put it all together. We’re not just trying to get up to the bar. We’re trying to hit a compression shape on our backswing, then a hollow as we pull. Simplify.
