The scar of a Rio Star Grapefruit. You might be inclined to choose fruit with fewer blemishes, but these wind scars (where the young fruit was scraped by tree limbs) are a sign of extra sweetness. To treat its own wounds, the tree sends additional sugar to the fruit! #themoreyouknow #organic #producefeature
“And before you finish eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half of the world. This is the way our universe is structured, this is its interrelated quality. We aren’t going to have peace on earth until we recognize this basic fact of the interrelated structure of all reality”
-Dr. King’s Massey Lecture
Taking today as a reminder of all our interrelatedness, both on the local and global level; our mutuality as Dr. King called it. We’re all part of our collective issues and liberation, if you can’t see our food system as inextricably tied to structural issues, then we suggest looking harder. Asking ourselves how do we build longer tables instead of building higher walls? To us food access isn’t just about healthy foods, it’s about healthy populations, labor rights, immigration, climate justice, housing, gendered violence, ableism, queer liberation, and racial justice only to name a few ways in which they play a role in our food. Dr. King did not just ask for peace, he asked for radical change, he asked us to know and learn about the hands that feed you, and the land that made it possible.

HUGE shout out to our community for the awesome turnout last night. The Opening Celebration, Education Room Dedication and Community Dinner went above and beyond what we expected. We love that our community showed up to help celebrate this new chapter in the Valley Natural Foods Story. Thank you to all our customers for their patience during this remodel and expansion, thank you to everyone who helped with the expansion in one way or another, and thank you to the community for continuing to support us! We appreciate you all, and none of this would be possible without the wonderful community we have.
Merling Preza 🇳🇮
President of Pachamama Coffee
As a collective of farmers, Pachamama Coffee is governed by a board of directors comprised of coffee farmers and their representatives from five countries. 🇪🇹Ethiopia
Pictured above is Merling Preza from PRODECOOP cooperative, representing 2,300 families in northern Nicaragua. She is also the current president of Pachamama's board of directors. A fearless leader in the specialty coffee industry for more than 30 years, Ms. Preza leads an accomplished group of directors from Latin America and Africa.
Pachamama's board is democratically elected by the small-scale farmers' cooperatives that own the company. Each of our 5 member co-ops sends 1 representative to serve on the board. Each representative has an equal vote, and they make decisions on behalf of the families in their communities they represent.
Strategic decisions are made by our board with the goals of strengthening the supply chain for their coffee, from seed to cup, and ensuring that customers love their coffee. #farmerowned
