Looking down past my saddle horn during this summer, more often than not I'd see Trudy laying down in the sagebrush in the shadow cast by my horse. Over the hundreds of dusty, hard miles ridden herding the beeves in the high country, she was a constant, Border Collie-shaped shadow, following me most anywhere I went.
I tried to return her continual demonstration of undying loyalty by pulling her into my tent every night to sleep on a makeshift bed of saddle pads. Although I paid a small price for my attempt at generosity with the investigation by the occasional flea and the muddled scent of sweaty horse blankets and dog throughout the nights, I couldn't leave her outside.
She might not be much of a cow eatin' working dog, but she's my friend and my partner out there in the sagebrush country. She's welcome in my tent anytime. -Melanie #cowdogs #mypartner #bordercollie #thebestdog #ranchlife
