#eighthundredgrapes #lauradave #goodreads #readingchallenge2018 #no57
I know some of you might have this on your list, just finished it -- somewhat of a letdown, but still probably worth the read. It was the twist that really wasn't. Still a great Kubica read.
"Ours is a middle-aged country with a maturing economy - with a political system that treats us like children: for too many decisionsthat should be ours to make, we are told what's good for us and we are ticked off if we answer back." ☝🏼 that was the line in the preface that got me to grab the book and pay for it instantly. And I must say, this thought-provoking collection of essays has forced me to challenge my own views and deep-rooted beliefs of my country 🗯 'Singapore, Incomplete' by Cherian George 📖 is a collection of twenty-eight essays that contemplates a multitude of issues, allowing me to gain insights on political liberalisation in Singapore and analysing multicultural integration in the society 🤔 The pages I've posted (please swipe right and read!) are excerpts from two essays in the book. I must repeat one of my favourite lines when it comes to discussing about multiculturalism: "managing diversity involves perpetuating diversity". Singapore needs to stop shunning away from talking about important race matters, in fear of disrupting status quo. I feel it's a pity that a city that claims to be a "modern society" ends up silencing minority voices far too often 🤨 here, I am also speaking about people of different nationalities, minority religions, ethnic groups, migrant workers and LGBTQ groups in Singapore whose stories deserve to be heard more 👂🏼 I'd definitely recommend this book for anyone who's keen and willing to expand one's mind and heart, to be open and learn about new perspectives 💭 I don't agree with everything that was espoused in the collection but I can no longer deny that political passivity will hinder a nation's progress to create a better world.

But, now, at the request of her brother, Eli, she must return and confront the demons of her past - Ryan included. After the loss they both suffered, she isn’t prepared to face him - especially considering he’s the only one who’s always been able to see right through her.
Ryan has lived his entire adult life in survival mode.
Growing up with an abusive father has taught him to keep women at arm’s length, and that’s never been a problem. Until Merit - the only woman he’s ever loved -strides through his front door. He’s not sure how long she’s staying, but he knows it’ll be long enough to destroy what’s left of his heart.
To overcome their dark past, they’ll have to shed light on a reality that will most likely tear them apart.
Merit has been hiding a heartbreaking decision from Ryan, and he’s been keeping lies of his own.

📚 Horror Movies 📚
Update: THE CONCERT WAS EPIC I ALREADY MISS HIM SO BADLY I WANT TO SEE EVERYTHING AGAIN LIKE NOW AND OMG I LOVE HIM 😭😭
I didn’t want to post like The Grudge dvd shelfie because that doesn’t fit with my feed so then I thought, how about a IT book in the background and this amazing movie moment from Funko of little Georgie and Pennywise?!😏
STORY TIME 🙋🏼♀️
I wanted this pop so badly, it’s a Hot Topic exclusive and had to order mine from a US store. I was a little scared because so many didn’t come with the little boat and GUESS WHAT?! Mine arrived without it lol😂
So I spent an entire evening on YouTube learning how to do a paper boat in origami style and let me tell you, it’s very basic folding paper IF you have a decent SIZE. This one had to be so damn small and it me took nearly three hours to actually fold an acceptable one, then one you are seeing 😱 Because you had to do the writing as well and that was almost impossible, I was ready to give up, it was hard enough working with that amount of paper and it needs the name too lol Somehow tho I did it and I really like the result. From afar you can’t really tell it’s a paper homemade boat and not the original vinyl one right?!🤓
❓Horror Movies lovers, finally a question for us, what’s your favorite horror movie?! 😏
AOTD: The Grudge 😜

I didn’t care for it, but there is some solid advice if you can dig through the clichés and self-importance Strayed dishes out in every response. | Completed 2017.10.19
Entry 77: It’s been over a month my fellow strong mommas. I’ve cried, slept, ate, hurt, smiled, laughed, questioned, cried, broke & got up. The loss of a parent is not easy.
I also read. This book in particular by @msrachelhollis
has truly helped me in that last part, the getting up part. Swipe for the particular pages that reminded me I have a story to tell, people to help and a dream to pursue. But I wholly recommend you go out and buy this one for yourself.
Girls, my face is washed and I’m back. Can’t wait to catch you all up on this blended family’s life and I’ll do my best to share all the good, bad, ugly, painful, and joyous events.
Thank you for your patience and for sticking around... xoxo, K.

Feels like Friday night! What are you reading this weekend ?
My bookclub read this book in January, but since I hadn’t yet created #BookTiniATL
I skipped that month’s selection. A couple of weeks ago I picked it back up and I’m pretty glad I did. 📚
Behold the Dreamers tells the story of Jende and Neni, two Cameroonian immigrants living in NYC. The couple’s pursuit of the American dream takes a affects everything from their health to their marriage as they figure out how to make it in the concrete jungle. 📚
Besides pointing out that I’m not living right (Jende and Neni live in 2008 NYC and make it on 45k annually and manage to not only send money back home, but save!!!!), this story really had me invested. It made me think of my own immigrant parents’ journey and wonder about the type of decisions and sacrifices they had to make to make this country their own. I wasn’t impressed with the ending, but that could be my own bias. Pick it up and see how you feel about it yourself. 📚

My 100th book of the year! Goal competed! I’m so proud and I’m very glad that I get to share this accomplishment with you all!
Here’s my review:
Corbin does a great job with this novel. She grasps the theme of obsession in this novel and doesn’t let it go until the very end. You can almost say that she becomes obsessed with the theme of obsession (or not, maybe it’s just me). I don’t know about you but I was very paranoid after reading this because the fact that someone out there could be watching your every move from a security camera is really creepy. But I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy the sense of paranoia, it was such a rush!
I was really invested in the novel and I can’t say that I lost interest at all. It did get a little slow throughout but the suspense was still there. I loved Ruby’s character. She was so enjoyable to read. Corbin builds us an obsessive character who will go to great lengths to get what she wants. And I mean great lengths. You won’t get the whole story until you read the whole book and as you read it you uncover the plot and you think “Maybe Ruby’s not that crazy.” But thinks again because she is. But she has good reasoning for the things that she does. This was a nice paranoia thriller and if I’m being honest those are the best kinds. It simply lacked a little in terms of “thriller,” but it was a creeper for sure!
Thank you Mullholland Books and Hachette Book Group for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. •

📚Book Review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Who doesn't love fairy tales with a little twist?🔪😈 I'm a huge Disney fan, and it's so great to read the origins of the stories and how they were a little... grim..😉 I feel like everyone should read Grimms Complete Fairy Tales to get the history behind the origional fairy tales and be gruesomely entertained while they are at it! 5/5 stars.
Bookstack! I love these short story collections from @barnesandnoble
(not sponsored). I always have some creepy short stories to read in between novels.👻 My favorites are Great Tales of Horror from H.P. Lovecraft and Complete Tales and Poems of Edgar Allan Poe. 😊
📚Book Review! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I honestly LOVED this novel. An amazing fantasy tale full of murder, sibling rivalry, jealousy, loyalty, betrayal, and much more. Anyone who knows me personally knows I am a huge Stephen King fan, and with that being said, The Eyes of The Dragon is definitely one of my favorite novels of his. King writes mostly of horror and supernatural, but he is amazing at fantasy too. I also love how this novel has a connection to The Dark Tower Series and The Stand because of the main villain and other little hints, although this novel stands on its own. I'd definitely recommend this novel to any fantasy or Stephen King fan. 5/5 stars. •
Goodreads summary: A fantasy of heroic adventure, set in the kingdom of Delain. It involves a king who is poisoned, a young and beautiful queen, a prince locked in a high tower while his younger brother assumes the throne, and an evil magician who harbours terrible secrets and malevolent plans.
