John Wesley Powell was born in New York #onthisday
in 1834. He fought in the Civil War and lost his right arm at the 1862 battle of Shiloh. After the war, he became a geologist and geology professor.
Powell is most famous for descending the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon in 1869. This passage is thought to be the first through the Grand Canyon by anyone of European descent. (Certainly many American Indians of various tribes had made the passage long before Powell.) Powell became the second director of the @usgs
in 1881 and was also director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the @smithsonian.
He lived until Sep. 23, 1902. #johnwesleypowell #grandcanyon #coloradoriver #geology #USGS #smithsonian #shiloh #civilwar #werehistory
