I’ve decided to tell the tales of some of the 165,000 incredible people who lay to rest at @highgate_cemetery
. If you like these stories, come along on a tour.
Welcome to my tour... The tale of a bad day at the office:
Introducing the fabulous Robert Liston 1794-1847.
Liston was a surgeon who pioneered the use of anaesthetics and some of his other techniques are still used today (Liston Splint and locking forceps). In a time where patients could die of shock due to a lack of pain relief, it was considered to be a skill to amputate limbs swiftly. Liston was a skilled surgeon who often had observers who would learn from his methods, and he would take pride in his speed, bellowing ‘time me gentlemen, time me!’ .
One unfortunate day while Liston was amputating a leg, the blade slipped and cut off the fingers of an assistant. In the commotion that ensued, another observer thought he too had been cut and died on the spot of a heart attack. Both the amputee and assistant died of gangrene just days later.
This has become known as the ‘Surgery with the 300% mortality rate’. Liston now lays at rest inside the terrace catacombs in the cemetery.
Oh and there was another time that he accidentally cut off a man’s #testicles
but that’s another story...! .
