最常見有人說”good boy”或”good girl”的同時會摸狗狗的頭頂以示讚賞，其實這動作對嗎？以下有幾個問題請各位回答
1. 你的狗 狗是否十分喜歡被觸摸？
We always encourage people to praise their dogs to increase the likelihood that a specific behaviour happens again in the future.
We often see people petting a dog’s head while saying “good boy” or “good girl”, is that a positive gesture? Here are a few questions for you to think about:
1. Does your dog enjoy being petted?
2. If a friend pets your dog’s head, does he/she enjoy it?
3. Have you ever experienced, as your hand approaches a dog’s head, that he/she backs away?
Some dogs love to have physical contact with people, our petting makes them happy, for example they open their mouth or even let their tongue hang out, like they are smiling. On the other hand, some dogs don’t see petting as a reward, especially shy dogs who are wary of strangers.
A reminder for everyone, when interacting with a new dog, we don’t recommend directly petting his head. Since we do not know the dog’s history, if we directly put our hand on top of his head where he can’t see what is happening above him, it may scare him. Perhaps the dog has been hit by hand before, which may have built a negative association and may trigger a bite. It is best to let dogs approach us at their own pace and sniff us first, then we can slowly start petting their chest or chin instead.
We can’t assume a dog always enjoys being petted, no matter whether we are trying to pet our own dog or a friend’s dog, always respect everyone is an individual. Keep an eye on their response as they are talking to us.
