I have always loved the beauty and brilliance of song. The art of the African American spiritual and its important role in the evolution of our history and preservation. These songs mean everything to me...songs of pain..joy and sorrow... This collected heartfelt expression gathered...delivered at the knees of shared hope and understanding...a powerful musical narrative...humbling. #cheflife #chef #cooking #blackchef #goodfood #homecook #harlem #alexandersmalls #freshingredients #cookingwithlove #cookingwithwine #cookingforlife #menwhocook #traveling #travelingman #travel #beardgang #blackbeardedmen #menwhocook #bearded #blackmensmile #blackmensmiling #greatfriends #dearfriends #harlem #hamiltongrange #alexandersmalls #afroasianamericancooking #afroasianamerican #homecooking

The Hamilton Grange is the only house this founding father (Alexander Hamilton) ever owned & is located in Upper Manhattan. Our first United States Secretary of Treasury only lived in the house from 1802-1804 (when he was killed). Gracie Mansion, 1907. A large tract of land was purchased here by carpenter Sybout Claessen in 1646, who named the area Hoorn’s Hook after his hometown in Holland. Merchant Jacob Walton later bought an eleven acre parcel in 1769, building a stately house, which he called Belview. Walton was a Loyalist, and in February #1776 , the Americans seized his estate and built a fortification protecting the hazardous #HellGate passage. In the days leading up to the invasion at #KipsBay , the British fired upon the American fortifications, destroying the Walton House. After the Americans fled, the British rebuilt the works and used the land as a camp. After the war ended, the Walton family got the property back, and in 1798 they sold it to shipping magnate Archibald Gracie. The next year, he hired John McComb, Jr., the architect of #CityHall and #HamiltonGrange , to design a #summer residence for him. Ezra Weeks was likely involved in the project, and the house may have been built atop the old foundations of Belview. The elegant Federal-style home, surrounded by a wide porch that caught the cool breezes coming off of the #EastRiver , was the site of many lively dinners that included illustrious guests like Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, John Quincy Adams, and Washington Irving. Gracie lost a great deal of money during the #Warof1812 , and in 1823, he sold the house, which passed through several owners until 1896, when it was taken over by the city. It became a part of the new East End Park (renamed #CarlSchurzPark in 1910), and was used as a comfort station and ice cream stand. In 1922, writer and socialite May King Van Rensselaer, a descendant of Gracie, spearheaded a campaign to preserve the #historichouse and make it into a #museum dedicated to the city’s history. A group organized the Museum of the City of New York, which opened in the house in 1923, remaining there until 1932. Several years later, Robert Moses convinced the city that the house should be used as the official residence of the Mayor, and in 1942 Fiorello La Guardia and his family moved in #NYC #GracieMansion #MCNY #architecture #18thCentury #history #NYChistory #DiscoveringNYC
Hamilton, the first secretary of the U.S. Treasury, commissioned architect John McComb Jr. to design a Federal-style country home on the Hamilton family's 32-acre estate in 1801. After moving in upon its completion in 1802, the family called the house "The Grange," after the ancestral home of Hamilton's father in Scotland. Like other well-to-do New Yorkers in the late 1700s, Alexander Hamilton and his family moved to Harlem Heights in Upper Manhattan, a rural area with cool breezes that also provided an escape from the yellow fever threat in Lower Manhattan, according to the National Park Service (NPS). Hamilton lived at The Grange for just two years. On July 11, 1804, Vice President Aaron Burr shot him in that infamous duel. Hamilton died on July 12. During Hamilton's short time at The Grange, he and his wife, Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton, entertained friends, colleagues and leaders in the house and its surrounding gardens, according to the NPS. But it wasn't close to Hamilton's law office — it took him about 90 minutes by carriage to commute to work in Lower Manhattan. After Hamilton's death, Elizabeth owned the house until 1833. The Grange was later acquired by St. Luke's Church in 1889, the same year the church moved the entire house from West 143rd Street to West 141st Street and Convent Avenue. The church also used The Grange as a temporary chapel, according to the NPS. In 1924, the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society acquired The Grange, with the mission of re-establishing it as a historic site and museum, according to the NPS. But almost four decades later, in 1962, the house changed hands again. This time, the NPS took control of the house, and the U.S. Congress named it the Hamilton Grange as a National Memorial, according to the NPS. In 2008, the NPS moved the house to its third location at St. Nicholas Park in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of Harlem. The public can visit The Grange for a free NPS tour, where guides delve into the life of Hamilton and his family, showing artifacts such as a silver wine cooler given to Hamilton by George Washington. . #alexanderhamilton #hamilton #hamiltongrange #hamiltongrangenationalmemorial

Hamilton’s Grange ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1800, Alexander Hamilton purchased 32 acres in Harlem. Within two years his house was built—he called it The Grange. The family only saw two years in this abode before Hamilton would be shot in a duel by Aaron Burr. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After his death, his wife held onto the house for 30 years more. In 1889, the Manhattan street grid had reached Hamilton’s home; St. Luke’s Episcopal Church saved the home from destruction and moved it two blocks away. Over the years it was used for church services, as a pastor’s home, and even served as a school. All the while it slowly was boxed in more and more between other buildings developed around it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1924, it was purchased by the American Scenic and Historic Preservation Society and turned into a museum. Eventually acquired by the National Park Service, it was made a National Memorial in 1962, and moved to St. Nicholas Park (2008) where it was restored to appear as Hamilton knew it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Out of the 44 National memorials that exist in the US to honor a historic person or episode, this is the only one built by the person it would honor. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ https://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/16/arts/design/alexander-hamiltons-renovated-grange-review.html ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #Hamilton #HamiltonGrange #NationalMemorial #AlexanderHamilton #FoundingFather #Founder #NewYork #NYC #History #Historic #NRHP #Park #Preservation #HistoryLover #History #Explore #Adventure #Sightsee #Travel #Travelgram #Wanderlust #Wander #Vacation #NewEngland #NortheastUSA #Manhattan #Uptown #MelonAndMe
Hamilton Grange National Memorial, known also as Hamilton Grange Mansion or Hamilton Grange, is a National Park Service site in St. Nicholas Park, that preserves the relocated home of U.S. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The mansion holds a restoration of the interior rooms and an interactive exhibit on the newly constructed ground floor for visitors. The Hamilton Heights subsection of Harlem derived its name from Hamilton’s 32-acre estate there. Hamilton’s house built in 1802, went through two relocations. The first move was in 1889, 1/2 block east and 2 blocks east, to Convent Street to accommodate the Manhattan grid. The Grange was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960. The private National Park Federation purchased the house and property and transferred it to the National Park Service. Congress authorized the National Memorial on April 27, 1962, requiring that it be relocated and then the house restored to appear as Hamilton knew it in 1802-1804, which is considered its period of historic significance. On May 9, 2006, the Hamilton Grange Memorial was closed to the public to allow for extensive architectural and structural investigations as part of a long term plan to move the house to nearby St. Nicholas Park. The park location was judged a more appropriate setting for display that would permit restoration of features lost in the 1889 move. The move would had keep it within the boundaries of Hamilton’s original 32-acre estate. The house was moved 500 feet to its location in St. Nicholas Park on June 7, 2008. The house was secured to its new foundation, original porches were built and the original front entrance and main staircase within the foyer were restored. Landscaping around the Grange’s new home includes among the tree plantings 13 sweet gum trees as were originally planted by Hamilton in honor of the original 13 states, a stone wall, a circular garden planted in front to Hamilton’s own specifications and paths. #hamiltongrange #alexanderhamilton #grange #nationalparkservice #hamilton #harlem #hamiltonheights #hamiltonheightsnyc #newyork #upperwestside #nationalmemorial #viewsfromanyctaxi
So today I took a tour of Alexander Hamilton’s house. As if this weekend couldn’t get any better. #alexanderhamilton #hamiltongrange
Took Jefferson and the rest of the family to see the #house #Hamilton lived his final years before #theduel , the only home he ever owned, where Eliza raised the #family and started the orphanage. Several visitors sported shirts from the musical, which remarkably--given all that was packed into Miranda's verses--did not mention his role in creating the Coast Guard, the Customs Service, and other key parts of our history that are chronicled within. #HamiltonGrange #NationalPark #HistoryHasItsEyesOnYou

Hamilton Grange National Museum: The home of Alexander Hamilton Like any human, he had his flaws, however his legacy cannot be overstated. For better or worse, he is the reason America has the economic system it has today. - -He fought for the US to be the Finance capital; created the dollar, and the National Bank (fed reserve) -Did not take high commissions for his lawyer services and eventually went bankrupt. - -Wrote of the atrocities of slavery and co-founded the 1st anti-slavery society in NY -Advocated for freedom of the press

You’re looking at the Hamilton Grange. The Grange was the NYC home of founding father Alexander Hamilton and takes its name from Hamilton’s grandfather’s estate in Ayrshire, Scotland. This two story Federal style home was completed by architect John McComb Jr. in 1802, only two years before Hamilton’s death. It remained in his family for 30 years after he died. Today it’s part of the National Parks Service and offers free admission and tours. . . . . . . . . . . #alexanderhamilton #hamilton #hamiltongrange #manhattan #nyc #nyc_ig #nyc_highlights #nyc_explorers #nycadventures #feelingadventurous #instanyc #lovenyc #instanewyork #nycgram #seeyourcity #girlguides #womenwhowander #tourguide #exploremore #passionpassport #what_i_saw_in_nyc #nychistory #historichome #hamiltonheights #bestofnyc #nycprimeshot #wanderlust

Listening to Ron Chernow’s “Hamilton” and naturally had to make the pilgrimage to Alexander Hamilton’s home “the Grange”, completed in 1802 and designed by John McComb Jr. who also did Gracie Mansion and New York City Hall. I’m a big fan of the federal style, with the selective use of ornament and material hierarchy, as well as sensitive massing, proportion and symmetry. Relocated twice, the house nevertheless remains on what was Hamilton’s property. . . . #federalstyle #architecturelovers #nyclandmarks #traditionalarchitecture #hamiltongrange #oldhouse #neoclassical #classicism #alexanderhamilton #theroomwhereithappened

In honor of Hamilton's passing #otd , here is a photo of myself from one of my programs as Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton. My four years at the Grange were where I learned so much about interpretation and public history. The Grange is where I truly learned that I wanted to become a historian. Each March, I gave a Women's History Month lecture and one of the best recived the programs was first-person historical interpretation. Children and adults alike loved getting to interact with Eliza in her home, though I had to insist that I wasn't sure "just when my husband was getting home!" Eliza has a deep, cherished spot in my heart. I think of her loss on this day, how it must have felt when the rug was ripped out beneath her again. Sharing a name with her is something I carry as a badge of honor. What an astounding, iron woman. #elizabethhamilton #elizahamilton #elizaschuyler #alexanderhamilton #july11 #1804 #hamilyear #historians #historiansofinstagram #18thcentury #19thcentury #findyourpark #hamiltongrange #hamiltonheights #itsquietuptown #otd #otih #harlemhistory
During the Revolutionary War, while both served as aides-de-camp to George Washington, Alexander Hamilton had a highly eroticized relationship with John Laurens of South Carolina, evidenced primarily from a series of passionate letters written by Hamilton between 1779 and 1782.⠀ -⠀ These letters have been dismissed as no more than literary flourish, although Hamilton’s executor saw fit to censor portions of them. As William Benemann states in his book "Male-Male Intimacy in Early America," "There is no irrefutable proof that Laurens and Hamilton were lovers, but there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to render indefensible any unqualified pronouncement that they were not."⠀ -⠀ Hamilton Grange is the major surviving location in New York City associated with Hamilton. The elegant Federal style house was built for him and his family in 1801-02 and he lived there until his death (on this day, July 12th) in 1804. Since that time, the house has been moved twice, though always remaining on land that originally belonged to Hamilton. In 1889, it was relocated 250 feet from its hilltop location to a plot of land next to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 435 West 141st Street. Over time its porches were removed, but it was made a National Memorial in 1962.⠀ -⠀ In 2008, the house was moved to its current site in St. Nicholas Park and was restored over the course of several years by the National Park Service.⠀ -⠀ Photos: (1) Hamilton Grange in its original location, c. 1880s, via @nationalparkservice ; (2) Hamilton Grange in its second location next to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1897, via @museumofcityny ; (3) The locations of the house over the years (land within the red boundary line belonged to Hamilton).
