I volunteer for the Crisis Text Line and it’s one of the most rewarding, selfless things I’ve done in a long time. However over the last several weeks we’ve had an intense spike. Evening conversations jumping from 3,000/night to 10,000/night. I was there every day and every night (hours at a time) to help texters in crisis. However managing my own self care is important too. So this whole week (since about Thursday last week) I haven’t taken any shifts, I haven’t logged on. Ive just taken time for myself, and my family. I love helping others, but I can’t pour from an empty cup. That being said, I’m so thankful that I was given the opportunity to help so many people struggling these last few weeks, and I hope to help many more. Stay strong everyone, I know the holidays are difficult, your feelings are valid. Yesterday I talked about bio-individual nutrition/treatment protocols versus one-size-fits-all. The first item to consider is your ancestry. Your ancestral background can be used as a rubric for explorations of different diet modifications. One can glean info and make realistic inferences from genetic research by examining regional and ethnic distribution of gene variations matched against your ancestry. * Example 1: the Inuit are uniquely adapted to cold environments, including their adaptation to a high-fat diet, particularly Omega-3’s. Interestingly, this study also found that the genetic mutations that allow for this are found in 2% of Europeans and 15% of Han Chinese. * Genetic variations in processing dietary fatty acids are much better-studied, and have the potential to affect blood lipids, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. There are two different genetic patterns that change the way humans process PUFA (Omega-3 and Omega-6 fats). There’s an “efficient” type (you do it really well) and an “inefficient” type (you don’t do it very well). Here’s the distribution: 🌎 Africa: almost everyone has the efficient type 🌎 Europe and Middle East: around 75% have the efficient type 🌎 East Asia and Oceania: roughly 50% 🌎 Americas: almost everyone has the inefficient type. * Example 2: MTHFR mutations are found in higher concentrations in Mexicans, Southern Italians and Northern Han Chinese * Example 3: The more copies of the gene AMY1 that you have the more salivary amylase you will produce to digest carbohydrates. The fewer you have, the more vulnerable you are to insulin resistance and thus, obesity. AMY1 is found in higher quantities in high starch agricultural societies such as the Japanese and Europeans, and high starch foragers, such as the Hazda. * If you only have a couple copies of AMY1, you may do better on a lower-carb diet even if you do all the right things to improve your carb tolerance. It’s been almost two weeks since my last post, and it’s been nice to take a break from social media and enjoy this special time of year with friends and family. . I had a follow up appointment with a new functional medicine doctor today and I am hopeful to have a very clear plan on the next steps to take and eliminate the guesswork moving forward. . He's going to treat the SIBO with Atrantil first and changing up my digestive enzymes. Then we are going to change my probiotic, focus on more anti-inflammatory foods, addressing my fatigue and adding in some adrenal support. . There's an imbalance going on in my colon and we're going to address that and the BIGGEST focus will be on mind health and the general stress level that I have in my life. 🤣 Uh, hello self care and breathing techniques! . . It’s extra rare when I actually participate in a #transformationtuesday . However, this was exactly 2 years ago / and then today. ❤️ ____ I had gained more weight than I had in my life with my last pregnancy. Soon after my son’s birth, I found myself in and out of the dark that can accompany the postpartum season. It turns out that my thyroid numbers were off the charts. 😳 ____ Long story short, here I am today. Not perfect, but with so much more ability, confidence, and energy than before. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos, and (with the blessing of my endocrinologist) I have been medicine-free for over a year because of my lifestyle. I am 60 lbs lighter, incredibly stronger, and significantly bolder now than I was in that first picture. ___ No magic pill. No wrap. Just good ole’ fashion strategic fitness and nutrition mixed with accountability and community like I’ve never had with my health journey before. Coaching adds an entirely different level, but that’s an EVEN longer story. I’m totally willing to tell it. Holler at your girl to get in on the good stuff. Any idiot can get a figure or bikini competitor into stage shape. All the coach has to do is be willing to endanger the health and well-being of the client. The competitor will look great, but it comes at a steep price. Want to hear the recipe that most of these trainer's use? (Note: This is what the IDIOT coaches and competitors are doing. Don't do this!) . 1. Take a girl who desperately needs attention and is willing to do anything to do well in a contest, mostly so she can post her pics on social media. . 2. Put her on a 800-calorie diet, mostly from protein. . 3. Have her do an hour or two of fasted cardio every day, plus some more after her weight training workouts. . 4. Have her do some crazy weight training workouts including stuff like a giant set of 20 squats, 20 leg presses, and 20 lunges... for 10 sets. Make sure the workouts are a couple of hours long and non-stop. It doesn't have to be a logical or smart training plan, it just needs to burn tons of fuel. . 5. Put her on the drug clenbuterol so that she'll burn fat more easily and will have the energy needed to function on her anorexic diet. . 6. Give her anabolics so that she won't lose muscle even with the starvation diet, excess cardio, and overtraining regimen. This is how I feel about strict dieting. I think you can see the tears welling up. And yes, those celery stalks are almost half the length of my body. I'm a tall gal. That's impressive. How you doin’? Have you taken a few minutes to check in with yourself today? To genuinely ask yourself – how am I feeling? What needs do I feel have not been met today, or yesterday… or for as long as I can remember? It’s amazing how many of us coast through our days putting everyone else before ourselves. If somewhere along the line you don’t make yourself a top priority too… then it will catch up with you! And before you start yelling at me… ’Ain’t nobody got time for that!’…. Hear me out! I had to develop a mindset that allowed for self-care in order to heal and live my healthiest life. At the start of my healing journey, I was incredibly overwhelmed! I worked 105 hours a week, I was plagued with symptoms of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis – severe depression, anxiety, fatigue, aching joints, dry skin, inflammation, poor gut health and multiple food sensitivities. I actually spent years feeling less than average and I had no idea where to start. That was until I learned that success really balances on developing the right mindset. I had to develop a mindset that revolved around seeing self-care as a priority! Developing a self-care mindset was no doubt one of the biggest challenges on my healing journey. At first, the idea of choosing myself as a priority was really difficult for me. Like many of you – I’ve always put others’ needs before my own. Needless to say, I fought the concept of self-care for a very long time. Initially, my autoimmune conditions left me lacking the energy to even begin contemplating prioritizing self-care and the maze of healing! Eventually, the desire to regain energy to be able to workout regularly again, and be fully present, overrode my resistance to self-care. I didn’t want to look back on my memories and have not had really been there in those moments, because I hadn’t felt ‘right’. By putting my own self-care on the back-burner and not making myself a priority – I was actually doing myself along with others a disservice. I realized that to be fully present in my life – in full mind and body – I had to make myself a top priority too.
A little back motivation for this #transformationtuesday and this wasn’t even the very beginning of my journey either I’ve been in the gym for years even before I learned about food years ago. I wish I would have taken more pictures at my biggest! You always wish you did so you have something to compare yourself to later. Take pictures! Don’t rely solely on a scale! Eating is always #1 in progress - exercise only supports a good diet! Fight for yourself and your goals! Always! ! I am using all of my anti-inflammatory plans, my own tips on my plans, and weights 3-4 days a week. Day 4 of the #HealthAndWellbeingReflectionChallenge ! 🙂 “What was my biggest challenge of 2018?” . Another one that’s really got me thinking. I think I have to say it was writing my book, which actually involved so much more than just writing it! I got married this year, which anyone will tell you is one of the most stressful times in your life, but the book was more stressful and challenging. I knew how to plan an event and put that together but writing a book and self-publishing it was a whole other thing. My husband and I had many late nights, working on it until 4am. The workload was immense and there were several bumps and learning curves along the way, but it has taught me a heck of a lot. And I don’t regret it at all, which was one of my anxieties before it was released. So much so, that I’ve already started on an outline for the next book, aimed at hypothyroid patient’s friends and family. 🙂 Will I self-publish this one? Well, there’s pros and cons either way, but at least I know how to do it now. . If you’d like to take part in this in the run up to Christmas and New Year, then feel free to join me! So, so important to consume raw foods on the regular to optimize health ✨ . Quick lunch consisted of a mixed greens salad (two eggs were boiling) and detox dressing. I usually top my salads with avocado but was out today 👎🏻 . I really began to notice significant improvement in my overall health when I started incorporating whole, living foods into my diet. You can search through study after study on disease prevention or ways to maximize health and you will notice the following trend: consume an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Plain and simple 👍🏻🙂 . While some vegetables are more nourishing when cooked, I still strongly agree that our bodies will benefit most from the abundance of fiber, enzymes, antioxidants, and phytonutrients found in raw foods. . Ways I incorporate raw fruits and veggies: * Large morning smoothie packed with alkaline greens + super foods * Juicing to increase bioavailability + promote cellular health (2-3 x/per week) * Large salads with mixed fruits and veggies * Mono fruit bowls - I love big bowls of berries, melons, and mango. * Hummus + veggies . With that said, if you have a digestive disorder, such as colitis, you may benefit more from veggies that are cooked for a time period, to allow your gut to heal.
