“Why do you still work?”
“Must be nice to have a doctor for a husband.”
“You probably won’t be working for much longer.” I hesitated to write this post, but this has been heavy on my heart lately so I wanted to share. I hear the 3 phrases above much to often. From people I hardly know, to those I’ve known for a while. Each time someone says it, I laugh it off, but internally I am furious and upset. Why do people think it’s appropriate to make these comments? Not only are they inappropriate for reasons I won’t dive into, comments like these completely discredit the career that I’ve built and worked so hard for over the past 9 years. I should not have to explain why I work based on my husbands career. In most circumstances, people would never imagine making comments like these to a woman, but for some reason, there is a stigma around being a “doctors wife” that has got to go away. Rather, let’s praise and uplift people for the work they do, for the careers they have built and for the talents they process.
