Today I have written how to prepare a herbal syrup in 6 easy steps (link in bio).
Great for this time of the year. A delicious herbal medicine for the whole family👨👩👧👦
Rose hips is my absolute favourite, what’s yours?!
The roots of #rhubarb
are used for their medicinal properties, but the variety is usually #turkeyrhubarb
.Once dried and powdered, they are included in the Essiac mix, and used for many conditions. The variety in the pic is Timperley Early, which is one of the top ones for flavour according to the RHS. Rhubarb stems are very high in oxalic acid, which is really not good for gout and arthritic conditions. The leaves are fine in the compost, however they make a great temporary carrying container or umbrella. 😀 rhubarb is also a great dye plant. #bwherbs #theherbsocietyuk #herbs #herbalmedicine #growyourownherbs #allotment #herbalism #herbalists

Borage in full flower last summer.
Borage has long been associated with courage. In the first century AD, Pliny referred to it as ‘Euphrosinum’ because of its euphoric effect.
As a herbal medicine it is diuretic, anti-tussive, antiinflammatory and helps to promote lactation. Most interestingly perhaps is its action in supporting the adrenal cortex. So many patients these days have exhausted adrenals, or are withdrawing gradually from steroid treatment and need adrenal support. The addition of a little Borage to their prescription is often a very helpful thing.
I absolutely love Borage and although I don’t use it very often I wouldn’t want to be without it in my dispensary. Unfortunately this is another herb which has fallen out of favour due to the fact that it contains a very low level (0.01%) of pyrrolozidine alkaloids.
One of the effects of these kinds of debates/issues is that it can affect the availability of herbs. If a herb has a persistent negative press then demand for it reduces and it may no longer makes commercial sense for wholesalers to stock it.
I believe that there may be a tendency for safety concerns to be exaggerated due to other agendas regarding herbal medicine. As more and more of our precious herbs come under fire we need to seriously consider growing our own if we want to continue to work and prescribe herbs the traditional (and safe) way.
Self sufficient herbalism is more than a choice made by green fingered herbalists. It’s quite possibly the only way that we can preserve our longstanding and beautiful herbal medicine tradition.

🌙 I don’t know where prayers go,
or what they do.
Do cats pray, while they sleep
half-asleep in the sun?
Does the opossum pray as it
crosses the street?
The sunflowers? The old black oak
growing older every year?
I know I can walk through the world,
along the shore or under the trees,
with my mind filled with things
of little importance, in full
self-attendance. A condition I can’t really
call being alive.
Is a prayer a gift, or a petition,
or does it matter?
The sunflowers blaze, maybe that’s their way.
Maybe the cats are sound asleep. Maybe not.
While I was thinking this I happened to be standing
just outside my door, with my notebook open,
which is the way I begin every morning.
Then a wren in the privet began to sing.
He was positively drenched in enthusiasm,
I don’t know why. And yet, why not.
I wouldn’t pursuade you from whatever you believe
or whatever you don’t. That’s your business.
But I thought, of the wren’s singing, what could this be
if it isn’t a prayer?
So I just listened, my pen in the air. - Mary Oliver

First off credit where credit is due. I didn't come up with this method of writing Herb monographs that honor belongs to my friend Sajah Popham who runs the school of evolutionary herbalism. He and I are of the same mindset on a lot of things and he came up with this great way of listing all the pertinent pieces of information that will give us a picture of the herbs we work with holistically. This is how I wanted to do herb write ups since day 1 but in order for it to make some sense to you I had to give you the background information in areas Like energetics. Here is a quick breakdown of the 5 pieces of information you need to truly see not only how an herb will function medicinaly but why it works. Those five pieces of information are
1) taste.. Through taste we can tell what the chemical constituents are
We can tell what actions it will have..
We can tell what organ systems it might work on (remember how bitter stimulates digestion)
We can tell the route of administration. (If it's an intensely bitter herb you might think twice of giving it as a tea)
2).actions..how will this herb shift or effect the body systemically.
3) affinities as mentioned yesterday what affinity does the herb have to a) organs b) systems and c) tissues.
4) energetics of the herb

Ocotillo (an indigenous plant that can be found here in New Mexico) Flower Essence 🌺
The flowers produce a sweet nectar that is perfect for tea.
But it is also harmonized to help assimilate the wounded healer.
It will assist you in being authentic, in taking control and no longer being a victim.
It will connect you with life force itself.
It moves stagnant qi, energy, blood, mucous, and intracellular fluid in the pelvic region or lungs outward, upward and downward.
It also assists with digestion and breaking down fats.

I've had a couple of messages regarding my very public love affair with echinacea from my stories the other day so I thought I'd do a lil (lol lengthy) Friday educational post about why I love this herbal ally so much ✨
Not only is it very visually pretty (this is Supreme Cantaloupe from @monroviaplants
) but with autumn coming up + throwing ourselves back into the work/study routine, you're going to want to have some echinacea root on hand 🤞🏻
A well researched and clinically trialled herb offering powerful immune modulating + immune activating (increases phagocytosis + white cell count) + antimicrobial properties? Yes pls
Remember not all brands are equal - a lot of brands will go for tablet quantity (u know who I’m talking about - $9 for 400 fish oil tablets? No ty) rather than quality of the herb. A good quality + effective echinacea liquid (undiluted) or tea that has a high alkylamide (the main active constituent) content will tingle your tongue!
PSA keep an eye out for a superdupersecret skin formula of mine that may or may not contain some of this bad boy 💅🏼
