I’ve been getting into learning about Kanawha State Forest, which I frequently visit. It was once an industrial site with an active coal mine within it. Then came World War II and the post-war alphabet soup of social programs. During that time, the once industrialized area was transformed into the beautiful state forest we have today. If you ever get a chance to hike there, I highly recommend it.

I truly found a gem in this world! I would follow him to the moon and back. In fact, I’m about to follow him on a 2200 mile walk to Maine in a couple of months. But really
It isn’t about me following along blindly, it’s about him inspiring me to have the courage to take those steps! ...
If I could have one of Tuananhs traits rub off on me, it would definitely be that he gives absolutely zero craps about what anyone thinks about him. I was always the opposite of this, especially in middle and high school!
There are so many things that I didn’t do because I was afraid that others would think it was weird or crazy. There were so many things that I did do or wear or say because I thought it was “cool”. Why did I think it was cool? Because it’s what everyone else was doing! I got bullied for being ugly or chunky or weird, and I would walk the halls of school with my eyes on the ground because I didn’t want anyone to look at me.
But no more! I have been beyond blessed to have Tuananhs influence! Anytime I talk to him about my insecurities or fears, he is so encouraging. He always says “why would you care what complete strangers think, when the ones who truly know you love you for who you are?” That one is always slap in the face because I’m like “omg, he is right”.
Can you remember anything you have done in the past because you felt that nudge of peer pressure? I remember lying about were my clothes came from in middle school. I hear these kids making fun of a girl for being “poor” because her clothes were from Walmart. So when they asked where my shirt came from, I would make something up, or even say “I don’t know, it was a gift”. Of course it came from Walmart, because why the heck would it matter (in fact, lately Walmart has literally come out with the cutest clothes, I was stunned lol), but I was so scared of what they thought that I lied! 😱
“You look happier” is the best compliment anyone can give you. I can say I have never felt happier with my mind, and body. I am the healthiest I have been in all of my 20’s. It’s taken a lot of time to get to where I am today, and I’ve taken multiple steps back and only small steps forward.
Today I turn 30 years old. I’ve went through so many different stages of emotions through out my 20’s, lost friends, jobs, went through multiple breakups, all to finally stop and look at myself in the mirror and ask myself if I was happy, or what I wanted to do with my life. I am eager to begin this new journey, and I think my 30’s are going to be the best of my life yet.
Here’s too new beginnings, new friends, more yoga, more climbing, and more snuggles from my fur babies.
Special shout out to @i_see_colors
for always pushing me in the right direction, and showing me love always wins in the end.

Congrats to woman who hikes and thru hiker @schnickel_fritz
who completed the Appalachian Trail! In her finisher photo she tells all about the not so glamorous (but also worth it) things along the trail, from mile 0 to mile 2190.9:
“There are many aspects of long distance hiking that are not glamours to most of the world. You physically exert yourself 10-12 hours a day, wear the same outfit day in and day out, shower and wash that outfit once a week, are in head to toe physical pain for 6 months, trudge up and down grueling (and often dangerous) mountains in rain or shine, and if you’re lucky enough to find flat ground you best believe it’s covered in roots, rocks, and mud. To most people, that sounds like hell, but if you find the strength to push through, you become one of the few that gets to watch the earth defrost from winter, blossom in to spring, thrive through summer and recede again in the fall. You witness newborn cubs, fawns, and fledglings find their way in the world. You drink from the purest mountain springs and eat plump wild berries from the vine. You yell your lungs out on mountaintops just to see how far across the range your voice will carry and echo back to you. You meet the most astonishing people and receive the greatest kindnesses from strangers who want nothing but to see you succeed. You live entirely from a backpack and find you don’t need much more than what you can carry, and that’s perfectly fine with you. So how do you say goodbye to a life best lived at 2mph? You don’t. You just simply say... See you later.” repost @womenwhohike
