H&M Files Lawsuit Against Graffiti Artist, Denies Copyright Protection.
What are your thoughts on this picture?
I’m in South Africa at the moment and there has been a lot of controversy here about it this weekend.
There have been protests outside the H&M stores in Johannesburg and Cape Town after the company released this pic on their website to promote sales of this jumper.
Of course this is a country with a complex and crazy history when it comes to race, and it’s something that however much I read or learn or even experience whilst here, I will never truly understand.
But I do wonder…does H&M releasing this image in the first place demonstrate their absence of discrimination when it comes to choosing who models which products? Does it show the absence of racism…as race was not considered or linked to the slogan on the jumper?
Or does it show a complete lack of understanding, awareness and sensitivity?
The brand immediately removed the images and made a public statement to apologise, saying: ‘Our apology is simple. We were wrong and we are sorry.
So how do we continue to move forward towards our Worldwide Tribe…where regardless of nationality, race, religion, culture and language, we are all one family?
I would love to hear your thoughts!
