While looking for historic architecture, I came across the Palmer house. The original hotel was built in 1871 by Potter Palmer who began his career as a bank clerk in upstate New York. He later became a dry-goods store owner in Chicago where he revolutionized the retail trade. He was the first to make big window displays, to use big advertising spaces, to send goods on approval to homes and to hold bargain sales. He became a brilliant hotel man as he applied his successful department store methods to the operation of his hotel.
Peacock doors pay homage to House of Peacock, Chicago's first incorporated business from 1837. House of Peacock was a Palmer House retail establishment known for fine jewelry and luxury goods like fine china, silver and gold.
Discovered unique hotel with an amazing decor! The Mediterranean-inspired property bursts with eclectic artifacts from around the globe, from African tribal masks and Moroccan lanterns to sculptures and wine bottle chandeliers. This funky place has a positive vibe, convenient location and is great value!
