Doesn't this just scream 'Fate', 'Destiny'? Can't you feel it coursing through you as you immerse yourself in that sky.
This doesn't just depict Alexander's battle at Issus, nor is it merely a coded reference to the defeat of Suleiman at the siege of Vienna. No, this is not any specific battle, this is THE battle, the only one that matters, the battle that has been raging for all of time.
How do we know this? Because half of the painting is taken up by THAT sky! A sky like that does not appear over just any battle.
But what are fate and destiny? Are they the predetermined events over which we have no power? Is this battle the result of events over which we have no control? Do we just sit back and allow fate to run its course?
No, we do not. For to do so would render our consciousness superfluous. Did we become conscious just so that we could allow things to happen deterministically, just as they always had done? Of course not. Consciousness allows us to seize control of fate, to craft our own destiny. The dialectic is not external to us, it IS us. We are the dialectic and we must begin to consciously direct it.
A painting like this does not show us an inevitable future event, rather, it shows us a possibility, and those who are sufficiently strong, sufficiently conscious, sufficiently hyperaware, can begin to actualise this potential. If a prophecy comes true, it is not because some prophet 'saw' the future, but because we unconsciously set about creating the conditions to allow that future to come about. But why do this unconsciously? Why not utilise the consciousness we have developed? Why not develop it further and use it to bring about the future we all know we can have?
We are fate. We are destiny. It's in the sky.
