This morning it just felt good to mooovvvveeee! If you saw my stories this morning you will know I hurt my back yesterday, which is a real frightner for me after a slipped disc injury just over 2 years ago. As I was working from home today I tried my luck at a cancelled appointment with my osteopath at lunchtime and I was in luck. Of all the things my left foot was not shock absorbing, so my heel was jammed into the joint, my fibula head was jammed up into my knee joint - which was funny because I had experienced some mild knee discomfort when doing leg day last week, so yesterday when I jumped badly my sacro iliac joint absorbed all the shock and wasn’t happy....which caused the pain in my back! . . Needless to say I’m all fixed but my left leg is a bit sore! I can only do upper body for the next two days so I think i am going to revisit the two split workouts from @alexia_clark last week then jump back in on Thursday with leg day. No #hiittraining until next week either but I can make cardio work in the short term. #noexcuses 👊🏻 . . How has Monday been for you? 💕 . . BLUE MONDAY Today has been marked as the most depressing day of the year. 😱 Distance from Christmas festivities, poor weather, waiting for pay day and failed New Years resolutions all add up to make this a rather glum Monday. Please note, this isn’t the same as experiencing actual depression, and so seek support from your GP or charities like @mindcharity if you think you are depressed. Help yourself avoid January low mood with the same practices healthcare professionals recommend all year: 🌞 Get some sunshine. We already know the value of natural light on wellbeing, so with short days, try to get out on your lunch break and over the weekends. 🤸🏼‍♀️ Stay active. And no, not in a force yourself to lose weight way, but in a way you can enjoy. For me, I need a variety, but especially warming up at hot yoga and getting upside down makes me feel amazing. 🥙 Eat to feel good. Find a balance between eating “healthily” (whatever that looks like for you!) and eating for comfort -think hearty stews, soups and porridge over cold salads. Sunday afternoon mobility. I look quite happy here but in reality stretching and mobility work isn’t the most exciting thing to do and it can be quite painful 😣!!However it’s an important part of training and should be part of everyone’s fitness routine in one way or another. Maximising performance, reducing injury and speeding up recovery between training sessions are just a few of the benefits. Lets chat exercise & mental health • With social media filled with posts (especially this time of year) on how to get ‘fit for spring’ and ‘lose weight’ and ‘beach ready’ it’s easy to forget that exercise also has a HUGE influence over how you feel inside • Of course there are always going to be aesthetic goals (me included 🙋‍♀️) but unless you are feeling strong on the inside, what happens on the outside really doesn’t matter • Here are a few benefits that exercise can have on your emotional and mental wellbeing - . ✔️ exercise releases all of the ‘feel good’ Hormones such as serotonin and endorphins. ✔️ exercise Makes you sweat 💦 ( well it should!) so you are sweating out toxins and nasties ✔️ exercise helps you sleep better ✔️ regular exercise boosts your metabolism meaning you are burning calories from food more effectively and in turn can get more enjoyment from it (post workout meals mmmm) ✔️exercise can be social meaning you are interacting and talking more, very important if you suffer with depression. ✔️ exercise is something that’s just for you. For you to be proud of. No one else can do your workout for you • I have been reading @bryonygordon book recently ‘Eat, Drink, Run’ and it’s been amazing to see how she puts down on to paper how exercise has helped with her depression. Missing this winter wonderland ❄️ ⁣ This was the beautiful forest behind the chalet we rented. 🌲 Other than staying in an aurora cabin/ igloo, I highly recommend staying in a chalet slightly further away from the ski resorts and hotels. You’ll have the nature all to yourself! #day19 @redjanuaryuk the most consecutive days I’ve ever worked out. I’ve been exhausted, with Work, the kids, running the house etc, but my energy levels are rising again. I feel clean and healthy, a little slimmer and most importantly my mind feels happy. . Working out with people really helps me keep motivated. The strong, inspirational women in this picture give me the strength to carry on. . Today keep active, I was in the gym with @joannalhughes & @jenniejenm at 6.15am! Loved it. If you can’t get to a gym let’s double up on those circuits. Combine days 5 & 6. Check out the videos on my squares (Instagram) for demonstrations. . HIIT Style : Work out 40 seconds Rest for 15 seconds / 40 seconds between rounds. Complete all the exercises, one after the other and repeat x 5 rounds. 1) Side suicides with burpee (beginner – drop the burpee or step the burpee back/advanced – keep low on the laterial gallop and drop the burpee chest to floor) 2) Forward jump to 90 degrees, turn and repeat (beginner basic squat/advanced jump as far forward as you can and get the bum low) 3) Squat, lunge right, lunge left (beginner – drop the plyometrics/advance add plyometric jumps) 4) Squat pulses (advanced– hold low on rest periods – ouch!) 5) Bridges (squeeze glutes and don't put your bum down on the floor between reps) 6) Squat, lunge right, lunge left (beginner – drop the plyometrics/advance add plyometric jumps) 7) Plank knee tucks keeping shoulders over wrists (beginner – hold onto chair, step in one foot at a time and return one foot at a time/advanced – hit the floor, flat back, knees to chest and keep on your toes) 8) Low squat jack (beginner don't take it too low/advanced drop bum below knees and use an explosive jump) 9) Right leg chair jump ups (beginner - tap your toe left on the floor to stablise/advanced - do not put your left foot down - the lower chair the harder it will be) 10) Left leg chair jump ups (beginner - tap your right toe to stablise/advance do not put your right foot down - the lower chair the harder it will be). January // My Self-Care Pledge⠀ ⠀ Fitness and the month of January have long been affiliated. With the new year usually comes new goals, so it only makes sense that many of us choose this month to focus on our bodies. ⠀ ⠀ Simultaneously, I can be pretty upfront when I say that many of us can also be unrealistic when setting these goals. Check out the videos on my squares (Instagram) for demonstrations. . . #Day18 HIIT Style : Work out hard for 40 seconds Rest for 15 seconds / 40 seconds between rounds. Complete all the exercises, one after the other and repeat for 5 rounds. There are 8 exercises in total. . 1) Heel taps (beginners drop the hop/ advanced add explosive moves and make contact with the opposite hand to food – stick that knee out and keep your chest up!) 2) Forward jump to 90 degree drop, turn and repeat (beginner do a basic squat/advanced jump as far forward as you can and get the bum low) 3) Hold a low squat and tap from right to left foot and repeat. Do not come up from a deep squat, feel the burn! 4) Chair jump squats with tuck jump (beginner – drop the tuck jump/advanced use explosive fast moves, try not to swing when seated). 5) Side suicides with tuck jump (beginner – drop the tuck jump and replace with touching the floor between your legs at each laterial gallop/advanced – keep low on the laterial gallop and jump high on the tuck jump) 6) Forward jump to 90 degrees, turn and repeat (beginner basic squat/advanced jump as far forward as you can and get the bum low) 7) Squat pulses (advanced– hold low on rest periods – ouch!) 8) Travelling alternate lunges (beginner – forward and back lunges, drop the travelling) . Total time 38 minutes and 5 seconds Your legs are going to burn!!!! . . Don’t forget to stretch, and have maintenance massages to keep your body in good form. Never give up 💪 ...If I were given only three words left to say those would be it. Never give up on listening to your heart. On going with what feels right, even if it may not be the simple thing, or the thing you were told to do growing up, or the thing that you’ve been doing for the last 3 years so should continue doing...we each have our battles; those days of worry or stress, of panic or restlessness. In such moments we face the challenge of conquering through and onwards. Each of you lovely human beings deserve to be doing what you aspire to, what inspires you, what you dream of, what makes you feel good, what makes you smile. And to not be afraid of making mistakes and see that as being all part of the extraordinary journey that is life. I guess what I’m saying is that if you’re finding yourself having more lows than highs then perhaps allow yourself a moment to listen to your heart, or to allow a change to happen. To peruse that hobby you’ve always wanted to but never quite had the time, to read that book that’s collected dust on your mantlepiece, to go for a walk in the countryside, to lie in the middle of the sitting room listening to music for 2 hours non stop, to stare out at the window in awe of this world, to try a boxing class... Whatever your heart is calling on - try it - you never know, it may just be that one change in your life that kick starts a new chapter of feeling better and more motivated each day. I used examples of new things I’ve recently tried to help myself get out of a negative spiral I’ve been trapped in. I’ve written this message as I know I’m not alone in having lows. If me writing this encourages you try something new, or to not give up on your beliefs, or to take a moments pause...that would be pretty epic.
