🌫Storm clouds gathering over Royal Liver building. Overlooking the River Mersey and dominating one of the world’s most famous waterfront skylines. This iconic symbol of Liverpool, built in 1911, and at the time, the tallest building in Europe, has the enviable status of a Grade 1 listed landmark building. At the heart of Liverpool's famous, iconic and always developing waterfront. Visually, nothing defines the city more than the Royal Liver and accompanying Cunard and Port of Liverpool buildings by Pier Head. Known collectively as the "Three Graces". The Royal Liver building was built between 1908 and 1911 as the headquarters for the Royal Liver Friendly Society.  It was constructed on a newly reclaimed building site, which used to be George’s Dock. At the turn of the nineteenth century Liverpool Corporation funded the development of three new sites for what are now called the Three Graces – the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board building, The Cunard Building, and the Liver Building. The Liver Building was the second to be built and by far the most ambitious by the architect Walter Aubrey Thomas. When completed the building was described in the press as a ‘skyscraper’ which it was, being the tallest inhabited building in Europe until 1934 and the tallest in the United Kingdom until 1961. As well as its remarkable construction the building has an unusual architectural style with Byzantine elements in the towers, and a Baroque porch, though its main character hints at contemporary architecture from across the Atlantic. This is a theme that may well have been influenced by my predecessor, Charles Reilly, the highly influential professor of architecture at Liverpool who favoured the North American styles. Widely considered among England’s finest cities, Liverpool is so much better in real life and the adjacent buildings are quite simply stunning. If you are visiting this really is a must see. #rockarphotography #streetphotography #storm #stormiscoming #liverpool #clouds #royalliverbuilding #liverbuilding #iconicbuildings #iconicarchitecture #cityscape #sky #photographer #thebeatles #skyline #cityscape #stormclouds #stormy #landmark #WalterAubreyThomas #ThreeGraces

Buckminster Fuller. The American Pavilion. Montreal Expo 1967. Visited in the middle of a snow storm ... still amazing. If we had more time we’d visit the only other remaining pavilion-which is the French pavilion but it’s on another island and it’s time to head back to the US for Thanskgiving... #iconicarchitecture #buckminsterfuller #geodesicdome #designclassic #architecture #modernism #midcenturymodernclassic #midcenturymodern #structure #biospheremontreal #buckyfuller #midcenturymodernarchitecture

One of our partners, Bill Porter, FAIA, worked directly with Louis Kahn on the Exeter Library project (among others). We recently did a walking tour of the Exeter Library with Bill. Villa Malaparte, Capri, Italy. The house was conceived around 1937 by the well-known Italian architect Adalberto Libera for Curzio Malaparte. Malaparte actually rejected Libera's design and built the home himself with the help of Adolfo Amitrano, a local stonemason. #casamalaparte #villamalaparte #design #interiordesign #architecture #view #adalbertolibera #capriitaly #italy #capri #capriisland #iconicarchitecture #curziomalaparte #wood #patina

I never tire of this beautiful and iconic Central London building. Built in 1775 the Freemason HQ is not only a pleasure to visit but to be asked back 3 times to design interior areas is an absolute privilege. #londonarchitecture #iconicarchitecture #londoninteriors #luxuryinteriordesign #interiordesign #luxurylondon #luxuryliving #freemasonshall
Interesting quote from Alvar Aalto. Architecture is an expression of culture, site and place which helps to define civilization. Culture vs civilization – which do you think architecture should belong to. #multihallemannheim #multihalle #freiotto #carlfriedmutschler #eutopiamultihalle #bundesgartenschau #architektur #herzogenriedpark #mannheim #sharingheritage ———————————————————— Visionary and unique: The Multihalle pavilion was built in Mannheim’s Herzogenriedpark, for the German National Garden Show of 1975. It was designed by the architect Frei Otto in cooperation with Mannheim’s Carlfried Mutschler. Frei Otto was posthumously awarded the Pritzker Prize in 2015. Otto created a roof structure that makes the Multihalle an architectural masterpiece – it is the largest self-supporting wooden lattice shell construction in the world. In the spirit of Frei Otto's thinking, the Multihalle is now becoming a versatile space of possibilities - as a symbol of future-oriented urban development in Mannheim. #multihallemannheim #multihalle #freiotto  #carlfriedmutschler #eutopiamultihalle  #architecture #iconicarchitecture #masterpiece  #mannheim #sharingheritage Foto: #daniellukac
