Sunlight streams through a failed roof. High up in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus a vast open-cast mine creates a deep scar in a landscape of quiet mountain slopes. It's depths dropping downwards in cut steps to an artificial lake at its center. High on the northern brink of the mine a small village sits totally abandoned in a wooded stand of pine trees. It has been this way since 1989, silent and still, albeit decaying slowly with time in the dry high altitude air. The people that once lived here were the mining families and evidence of their lives from three decades ago can be found inside the buildings. Desks with half written pages in note pads, 80's pop star posters on a bedroom wall all remain from the day they packed up and walked out never to return. The reason for the villages abandonment stems from the mineral that was being extracted here, during the 1980's the health risks associated with asbestos were being realised and once the world woke up to these risks the market collapsed and the mine became redundant. Moving on became a matter of economic necessity but also I imagine down to health concerns. These days the mine is being made safe by the local authorities, trees are being replanted and a huge effort is being made to attract visitors to the area.
