This time we are taking you to a more wintry location - Riga, the capital city of Latvia.
Did you know that the 1st recorded decorated Christmas tree is from here? Yes. Turns out in 1510, during Christmas celebration a fir tree was put up in one of the city's squares, decorated with paper flowers for people to dance and sing around it. They say that this is where the tradition to decorate the Christmas tree began.
Even though more popular as a summer destination if you get to visit Latvia in winter, get the best of it. Today during Christmas season Riga turns into a festive holiday land. With Christmas market that offers different local handcrafted good and aromas of mulled wine filling the air (it's worth trying it!!), it can really turn into a place of fairy tale.
Riga offers different romantic restaurants for dining with Old town charm as am additional bonus. However tucked away between centuries old buildings and many church towers is Valtera Restorans that offers exclusively local cuisine. Here you can enjoy anything from venison to quail and local fish, and top it off with a dessert that's craftily made of berries, grown somewhere in Latvian forests; And who knows you might even stumble upon a Latvian made berry wine. Latvia us not necessarily known for wine as it is just a bit too far north... or maybe no? There's a winery in Norway that's even further north.
