A favorite of young and old alike, National Hard Candy Day is observed annually on December 19.
Most hard candies are 100% sugar with flavoring and colors added. To achieve a hard candy, confectioners boil a sugar syrup to 320 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, the hot, pliable sugar is poured into molds or rolled and folded into shapes and left to cool. Once cool, the solid sugar becomes hardened and brittle.
The first hard candies such as lemon drops and peppermints were likely prescribed as a remedy for stomach ailments.
Hard candy became popular in the seventeenth century as sugar prices fell. Previously, hard candy was something that only the well-to-do could afford. By the mid-1800s, over 400 companies were manufacturing this popular treat.
In 2015, Jolly Ranch surpassed Werther’s Original was the best selling hard candy. Other popular hard candies include Dum Dum Pops, Life Savers, Tootsie Roll Pops and Charms Blow Pop.

Do you have a photo (or several, like I do) that when you see them, it feels like someone sucker punched you in the stomach? The photo on the left is one of them. I’m still trying to hold back the tears. This journey is a struggle and some days are better than others. I had a great day on track, worked out, water in and steps competed. And even with all of those things done... I’m struggling mentally with the past. I’m afraid that I am going to hit a point, say forget it I’m done and go back to the old me. Anyone else feel that way? Looking at old photos is difficult because during those time I didn’t feel that big or I felt good wearing what I was wearing but I don’t think I was aware of how big I was. I guess I am just disappointed in myself. To get past this disappointed feeling I have towards myself, I must first forgive myself which is going to be a process in itself. ❤️ But a process I am ready for.

Three miles while watching the sunset (check my story for gorgeous sunset views!). This sunny, snowless Michigan weather is winter perfection....just wish it would last!! I signed up for a Spring race already & I can’t wait to start training!! Last Spring/Summer was crazy with house hunting & buying & moving...hoping to hit a few more races this (upcoming) season. Calf raises make me feel strong.
I mean, I bench and squat my weight when I workout. It’s important to me to be able to do that for reps.
Calf raises, however, let me go beyond my weight with control and confidence. That’s important as well since I workout alone.
One day I’ll test the limits of my strength (with a partner readily available), but for now, doing calf raises on a Smith machine will have to do.

What do the two women in this photo have in common?
They’re both full time nurses with two kiddos 3 and under. They’re both grad students carrying a full semester course load.
They both have sleepless nights, early morning wake-ups, crazy schedules, and way too few hours in the day.
But the girl on the left is exhausted. She doesn’t think she has time to spend on herself. She gives and gives and gives from her own cup without ever filling it up. She can’t keep up with her kids. She relies on multiple cups of coffee just to get through the day and then sometimes wine at night to help her “wind down”
The girl on the right realizes that taking care of herself is important. That in order to be the best mom for her kids, she needs to put herself first sometimes. She focuses on nutrition and filling in the gaps with superfoods. She squeezes in 20-30 minute workouts to take care of her body. She has the energy to run after her kids and still do homework after they go to bed at night.
There is no magic pill, potion, cream or wrap that can take the place of proper nutrition and exercise. BUT there are programs that can help you find the RIGHT nutrition and the best exercise for your crazy life
Mamas, I know it’s crazy and it’s tough and some days it feels like it’s all you can do to keep your head above water. But if I can find the time to take care of myself, I PROMISE, you can too

I hit 2 milestones this week. Today my scale said 134.0. I haven’t seen that number since...I don’t know when...maybe junior high! 😁 And this last weekend I bought a size 4 jeans. Size 4!! A year ago I was buying 10/12. 20 years ago I was buying size 22/24! When I think of it that way I realize this journey is something I’ve been trying to accomplish since I was 21 years old. It took me all those years of yo-yo dieting, looking for the quick fix, making excuses and lying to myself to finally find what works. Work works. Putting in the hours at the gym works. Eating right works. Not being an asshole works. And finding a community that helps you along the way works. I found that community in @1stphorm
and in my coach @raytlaw.
I could cry when I think about all I’ve accomplished in the last year. People say I’ve changed and I take that as a compliment because they’re right. I’m so much better than I was 12 months ago. Mentally and physically 💪🏻
So for the first time I am entering these last weeks of the year thinking about how I kept my promise. How I built great habits. How I know I’ll enjoy Christmas dinner without guilt. And most importantly how January 1st won’t be a day of feeling the pressure to make a resolution. It’ll be a day that I celebrate all the things I get to do in 2019! 😊💙

Set the tone for the week with a much needed gym sesh! I’ve gotta admit I’ve been slacking, but then I had to remind myself of what I’m trying to accomplish. It’s not a “hot mom bod”, it’s so much more. It’s a healthy life, it’s to be active with my kid, it’s to fit into my clothes! It’s to help others look and feel the same mentally and physically!
Never forget WHY you do the things you do, keep those reasons very close to you as daily reminders and never take the opportunities you have for granted. 🙌🏽
All in all, today was a great much needed relaxing day off. Spending time with the one I love and doing the things I love to do 👌🏽 I’m okay with that!
