“The Douglass statue is about bringing people and a community together.” -Carvin Eison, Project Manager of the Re-Energizing the Legacy of Frederick Douglass
Last night with images of Douglass over their shoulder, a panel gathered for 'Frederick Douglass and Public Art Today' hosted by @magrochester
featuring Carvin Eison, Joan Saab (Associate Professor of Art History and Visual Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester) and Carolyn Vacca (Monroe County Historian and Associate Professor and Chair of History at St. John Fisher College), moderated by @blk_amanda
(Artist and Arts Administrator, Flower City Arts Center). Also in the audience was the sculpture of the replicas, @oliviakimstudio
, who spoke briefly on the statue and sung the praises of volunteers who helped her bring Douglass to life
Currently the gallery has a Douglass statue on display, which connects the public art in the streets of Rochester to their space. The MAG also commissioned a beautiful visual piece on Douglass, “Lessons of the Hour” by Isaac Julien, which can be viewed by visiting the gallery
While the focus was on the statues of Douglass, the panel touched on the importance of public art and supporting artists. After a question from the audience, Amanda Chestnut offered up some advice on what that support could look like
“One thing you can do to support art is buy art from living artist,” Chesnut said. “If you don’t have money, give time”

Tried this beautiful Petite Noir from @casalargawinery
last night and I’m pretty sure I’ve found one of my go-to light bodied wines for the summer! If you like fruit forward wine that’s medium dry, look no further. I got cherry, strawberry, & watermelon on the nose with a lovely cranberry finish. Low tannins, low acidity, and all around easy drinking. Cheers!🍷

George Eastman bicycled to work – not just in his young banking days but even when Kodak was well-established. The ride from Soule House (the residence he and his mother lived in before he built his mansion) to Kodak State Street was a 2.6 mile ride each way.

Anyone else getting “Summer Vibes” today? ☀️ Even though it was only 61° I got all the happy feels of summer today. We grilled outside for dinner, went on a walk (bike ride for my 7 year old) and got to have the kids play in the sandbox. I am loving it! 🌈
“...And we were dancing, dancing
Like we're made of starlight...”
Every once in a while I come across an image that I’ve captured with a client and see it in a different way. That happened with a gorgeous image of Emma we took at the end of her session. She has an amazing grace as a dancer and I just love this pose of her under the stars in the moonlight! What are your thoughts?
“My middle name is Vi, a name I've grown to love for its uniqueness. The name came from my maternal great-grandmother Viola. She hated to be called Viola and went by Vi. I wanted a way to honor the name any my connection to her forever. I love floral tattoos and thought Christy would be a great fit to design one!” - Emily, @emilyvi
Each client has a "why". It is the driving force behind the project. I always make a point of asking about their inspiration because there are gems hidden within their story that we include in the piece.
For this client, I nestled the two violas (also called pansies) in what felt like an embrace representing the relationship of the two women. Can you see it as well? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
(ps - My excitement to get the finished piece in my client's hands overcame my need to take a picture of the original piece. So let's pretend that this is my desk, I just finished the piece and that pencil is actually a pen. ok? 😉) #rochesterny #585 #thehouseofroushey
