We felt inspired and jolted by a quote from the Dalai Lama shared by @saltyluxe
yesterday, so thought we would share it here as well.✨
When asked what surprised him about humanity the most, the Dalai Lama replied: “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.” (photo is an outtake from our book ‘At Home in Joshua Tree’ for our Moroccan rug guide in collaboration with @soukiemodern

Here’s another one: Sunrise or Sunset? Comment below.
We’re getting so excited to host an intimate group of you for an embroidery workshop with @sarahkbenning
at the Casita on Nov.24! We’ll start with a plant walk through the garden to learn about a few varieties of cacti, and then Sarah will teach you how to translate those plants into stitches. We’ll provide lunch, materials, and everyone that attends the workshop will receive a signed copy of our book ‘At Home in Joshua Tree’ as well! 🌵✨ sign up here: https://thejoshuatreehouse.com/cactus-embroidery-sarah-k-benning/ #athomeinjoshuatree
The view from Keys View, inside @joshuatreenps
is amazing. This small hike is handicap accessible and is the perfect place to watch the sun rise or set across the Coachella Valley.
These moments are necessary. To be quite honest, we’re addicted to our work—everything from designing new spaces, writing and reflecting on our experiences, and attempting to capture it all with photography. We often take on more than we can handle alone, and would most likely send ourselves into terrible health without the help of those around us. Our crew at the JTH (Geneva, Mindy, Lori, Armando, and Heidi) make it possible for us to have the time and space to work on creative projects like our book ‘At Home in Joshua Tree’, and to take evenings off like this one to simply sit out and enjoy the sunset together. @jcrew #ad #meetmycrew

We’ve been dying to share some of the photos we took for our book ‘At Home in Joshua Tree’, but thought we’d start with some outtakes. This was from a scene we photographed for a section about entertaining as a natural extension of home. Wooden serving boards (like this one from @fire_onthe_mesa
) keep entertaining simple and beautiful. Here’s a quote from our book: “Entertaining can easily become an overcomplicated additional layer to life, but it doesn’t need to be that way. Boxes of holiday decor and dishware stashed away for special occasions are a thing of the past. Curating well-made items that are both beautiful and functional throughout your home means that those pieces are there to help rather than inhibit you as one more thing to store away.” #athomeinjoshuatree
Yesterday was the new moon, which means the sky looked like this out here in the desert. 🌑✨🙌🏻 It also means we updated our New Moon playlist for the fall season. @chase.mcbride
curated just about five hours of music for you all featuring @rattlesnakecharm.
It’s a good one—hope you enjoy it as much as we are. 🎶 #newmoonplaylist
Until I started making the present a priority everything was pushed off until "later". I could become a freelance designer "later", I could move "later". "Now" is scary, but it quickly shapes our future. @fossil
has asked me to share how I take the time to follow my passions… it’s in these moments: getting outside for an hour or two despite the guilt of not being “productive”, exploring a new place, turning off notifications for a while, and writing with real pen and paper just to see what comes out. These small acts add up… so be nice to yourself. Productivity is not always hours spent working, but away from work, refueling. #sponsored
Here’s the view from our future bedroom. Construction is finally coming to an end this week. Over the next month, we’ll be cleaning, furnishing, arranging, and making sure everything is perfect for you to come visit. We can’t wait to host you.
Joshua Tree National Park really is a magical place. 🌄🏜✨⛺️
Are we crazy that on days in the 90’s it sometimes feels too cold to get in the pool?? What has the desert done to us?! 😂 The weather says that next week we’ll have temps in the 80’s - we’re gonna have to get our sweaters out.
Sweet and slow casita mornings. We can feel the air cooling, mornings lately have felt a bit like fall. ☕️✨ #thejoshuatreecasita
We always talk about taking the time to reflect, reset, and create, and the process of creating this book offered us all three (particularly a lot of reflection). Sitting in that silence of reflection with a blank document before us as we started writing our book was incredibly intimidating - and now that we are just a couple of months away from the release of the book all of those feelings are resurfacing. A bit of both excitement and nervousness will be with us for the next few months, but it’s been so meaningful to get sweet messages from you all who have pre-ordered. We put our hearts into this project. ❤️ (ps - here’s another outtake from our author photos that @timmelideo
took for us. we do own other clothes - like at least two other outfits 😂) #athomeinjoshuatree
Update: Winner is @victoriawojtan
!✨🌕FULL MOON GIVEAWAY🌕✨ Our book, ‘At Home in Joshua Tree: A Field Guide to Desert Living’ releases in less than two months, and we truly can’t wait to share this labor of love with you. The book covers our carefully curated design principles, wellness practices and entertaining rituals, as well as guides to desert trails, wildlife, and plants. In celebration of the upcoming release, we’re giving away a two night stay at the Casita, and a private ride for the winner plus one friend with us (Sara & Rich) around Joshua Tree in @seescoutgo
to a few of our favorite spots!
One of our favorite hikes is Arch Rock Nature Tail. This is a perfect hike if you have limited time in the park, or if you’re not into rigorous hikes. It’s only a half mile loop to see the Arch Rock, a 25-foot natural arch formed by centuries of erosion. The trail starts by campsite #9
of White Tank Campground off Basin Road inside @joshuatreenps.
A Rocky Night / Lit by the Moon
I can’t decide what brings me more joy: this dog or the fact that Auntie Anne’s followed me on Twitter. ... JK the pretzels are a close second.
Felt good to do some personal shooting last night in Joshua Tree. 🌚
Because we don’t post enough Joshua Trees... Happy Thursday everyone! 🌵🌳🤔
Even the smallest bits of water transform our summer days out here. We always feel grateful to live out in the desert in a time where it’s possible to have access to water, work remotely, and even have conveniences like a/c. We never take those resources for granted—they’ve come to mean so much more living remotely. 🌵💦 #thejoshuatreehouse
One of my favorite places to explore. Looking forward to the next trip.
