🎭 The Inheritance (part 1&2)
🏛 Noël Coward Theatre
📍 London 📆 January 2019
One may as well begin with dispelling the myth that 7 hours of theatre is too long, because honestly, it flew by quicker than most standard plays a third of its length and I would have loved even more. Last night was the closing night of @inheritanceplay
after two sell-out London runs, and it was nothing short of a privilege to be there. A powerful, poignant and painfully relevant piece of writing, telling the story of multiple generations of gay men and their battles with love, acceptance, identity and devastatingly, HIV. This perfect example of an ensemble support and drive each other to give the very best performances I have seen in a long time. @atburnap
as arrogant and troubled #TobyDarling
as loveable Eric were utterly hilarious and heartbreaking in equal measure. The two stand outs were @samhlevine
who pinned us against the wall as he flipped between Adam and Leo in front of our eyes. What a superb talent and one to watch. The second was the understated brilliance of #PaulHilton
as Walter and Morgan, who stole my heart from his first words and his emotions felt so real I wondered if we were actually old friends.
As this generation of young, vibrant, gay men in New York learn more about the devastation of a generation before them that so recently went through hell, a story unfolds that it would be impossible not to be touched by. And that leads me to the true star of the show, @matthewmichaellopez
, whose E.M.Forster-inspired piece is not just great writing, its essential viewing and dry eyes were nowhere to be found in the audience or on stage and the deafening 4-tier standing ovation refused to stop. Hilarious, tragic, empowering and shocking - we left wrung-out for all the right reasons. This epic piece of theatre, no history, is such an important watch. Beat that 2019. Spectacular. 💡Random fact: despite being entirely based in and around New York, this has not been seen on broadway...yet....
