Built by the rulers of Somavamsi dynasty, the Rajarani Temple is an 11th-century Hindu temple located in Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, India... The temple is believed to have been known originally as "Indreswara"... It is locally known as a "love temple" because of the erotic carvings of women and couples on the temple... Rajarani Temple is built in the Kalingan "Pancharatha" style of architecture on a raised platform with two structures - a central shrine called the "Vimana"(sanctum) with a "Bada"(curvilinear spire) over its roof rising to a height of 18 metres(59 feet), and a viewing hall for the people called "Jagamohana" with a pyramidal roof... The temple was constructed of dull red and yellow sandstone locally called "Rajarani"... There are no images inside the sanctum, and hence it is not associated with a specific sect of Hinduism but broadly classified as Shaivite based on the niches... The battlefield that witnessed the great Kalinga War... It was fought around 262 – 261 BCE between the Mauryan Empire under Samrat Ashoka and the state of Kalinga, an independent feudal kingdom located on the east coast, in the present day state of Odisha, north of Andhra Pradesh... The Kalinga War was one of the largest and bloodiest battles in Indian history... Despite an unexpectedly fierce resistance from the Kalingans, the Mauryan Empire claimed victory and annexed the state of Kalinga... Kalinga did not have a king as it was culturally run without any... . The Kalinga War Date :- 262 – 261 BCE Location :- Kalinga, Odisha, India Result :- A decisive Mauryan victory Territorial changes :- Kalinga annexed by the Maurya dynasty Belligerents :- Mauryan Empire | Kalinga Commanders/Leaders :- Samrat Ashoka(Maurya dynasty) | Karaveludu(Kalinga) Strength :- Total 70,700 | 6,000 infantry, 10,000 cavalry, 700 war elephants Casualties & losses :- 10,000 | 50,000(figures by Samrat Ashoka)(including civilians) . This is the only major war Samrat Ashoka fought after his accession to the throne... The bloodshed of this war which made the River Daya flowing through the battlefield turn red is said to have prompted Samrat Ashoka to adopt Buddhism... The aftermath transformed him from "Chandashoka" to "Dharmashoka"... . . . #natgeotravel #natgeotravellerindia #natgeoindia #indiaphotosociety #indiapictures #indiatravelgram #travelbugindia #travelrealindia #indiaview #indiaclicks #_instaindia_ #discoverindia #storiesofindia #indiabeats #indiagram #yourshot_india #lonelyplanetindia #indiadiaries #igramming_india #ig_india #incredibleindia #photographers_of_india #indianshutterbugs #desi_diaries #wanderlust #mypixeldiary #dslrofficial #travel #travelphotography
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, the Sun Temple in Konark, Odisha is also known as Surya Devalaya or Black Pagoda... It is a 13th century temple dedicated to Sun God... Currently repair work undertaken by The Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) is in progress... . (Royal Guard of Konark - Lion Upon Elephant Upon Man) . Seen here is the eastern gateway, which is the main entrance to the temple compound... It is decorated with 2 "Gajasimha"(Lion upon Elephant upon Man) statues having outward faces, installed on two high stone slabs on either side of the passage... Two high stone benches are also provided at the inner sides, possibly meant for the guards to sit... According to the Hindu mythology, the lion resembles pride, the elephant resembles wealth, and both of them kill the human... The entire figure is made out of a single piece of stone... The steps through the passage lead up to the "Nata Mandir"(dance hall)... Also seen is the "Bhadra Deula"(small sanctum) or the "Jagamohana"(assembly of the people) in the backdrop... . . . #natgeotravel #natgeotravellerindia #natgeoindia #indiaphotosociety #indiapictures #indiatravelgram #travelbugindia #travelrealindia #indiaview #indiaclicks #_instaindia_ #discoverindia #storiesofindia #indiabeats #indiagram #yourshot_india #lonelyplanetindia #indiadiaries #igramming_india #ig_india #incredibleindia #photographers_of_india #indianshutterbugs #desi_diaries #wanderlust #mypixeldiary #dslrofficial #travel #travelphotography

The "Konark Wheel"... . The Sun Temple of Konark, Odisha was designed in the shape of a huge chariot drawn by 7 mighty spirited horses on 12 pairs of gorgeously decorated wheels at its base... The size of each wheel is 9 feet 9 inches in diameter, having 8 wider spokes & 8 thinner spokes... Out of these 24 wheels, 6 are on either side of the main temple, 4 are on each side of the small sanctum & 2 on each side of the steps on the eastern front... Various theories have been advocated regarding the significance of the Konark Wheel... According to some, the 7 horses represent the 7 days of a week, the 12 pairs of wheels represent the 12 months of a year, the 24 wheels signify the 24 hours of a day & the 8 major spokes signify the 8 "praharas"(3 hour period) of a day... According to others, the wheels of the chariot have been interpreted as the "Wheel of Life"... They portray the cycle of creation, preservation & achievement of realisation... These 12 pairs of wheels may also possibly represent the 12 zodiac signs... Some also believe that the Wheel of Konark is the same as the Dharmachakra of the Buddhists - The Wheel of Karma, The Wheel of the Law... The Konark Wheel has 8 wider spokes & 8 thinner spokes... The distance between two wider spokes is of 3 hours(180 minutes)... The thinner spoke between two wider spokes is of 1.5 hours(90 minutes)... There are 30 beads between one wider spoke to the next thinner spoke and each bead represents 3 minutes... The sundial shows time in an anti-clockwise manner & the top centre wider spoke represents 12 o' clock midnight... . . . #natgeotravel #natgeotravellerindia #natgeoindia #indiaphotosociety #indiapictures #indiatravelgram #travelbugindia #travelrealindia #indiaview #indiaclicks #_instaindia_ #discoverindia #storiesofindia #indiabeats #indiagram #yourshot_india #lonelyplanetindia #indiadiaries #igramming_india #ig_india #incredibleindia #photographers_of_india #indianshutterbugs #desi_diaries #wanderlust #mypixeldiary #dslrofficial #travel #travelphotography
