On this day in 2017, Rohit Sharma scored 208*, his third ODI double hundred.
After being bundled out for just 112 and was reduced to 29-7 in the first ODI, India was under pressure to win this match. So, when asked to bat first, the Indian openers were careful not to get out early. Thus, for the first ten overs, they scored just 30-odd runs. The fatigue that the bowlers picked up forced the visitors to opt for part-timers and the Indian run-rate started to increase slowly.
Rohit Sharma converts his starts better. Only a few players have record greater than him. He averages almost 115 which he gets past 30. It is relatively difficult to get him out if he goes past 30. He is watchful for the first few overs, puts away the bad deliveries and unleashes the beast mode once he gets settled.
This innings followed the similar pattern. He made his ton in the 40th over facing 115 deliveries. In the next 36 deliveries, he made his second ton. While he broke tons of records, the Sri Lankan bowlers were breaking records too, but worst. Rohit Sharma's innings was well supported by Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer who scored half-centuries. India finished 392/4 in their 50 overs then came back, destroyed Sri Lanka, won the match by 141 runs.
After getting to his 200, he kissed his ring finger, dedicated the innings to his wife as the anniversary gift. She was visibly emotional and moved. It was one of the adorable moments I've ever witnessed.
