Here’s how to #escape
Wandering around the ruins of Ružica Grad #ruzicagrad
in central #Croatia
yesterday, I thought of you.
The stones of this #medieval
chapel/castle/town have been here since at least 1357, when it was functioning and not in ruin.
It sits on a mountain top above a natural spring and manmade lake.
It’s a steep hike up from the camping and swimming area, though heinous mosquitoes and gorgeous foliage.
But once you emerge onto the top of the mountain, into the blazing sunlight, the clouds of #mosquitoes
dissolve and something changes in the air.
After a few minutes, I had forgotten everything but the eternal moment.
Nothing existed but those rock walls, and my own body and awareness exploring the ruins.
And I got a sense of what life was like a few centuries ago.
The feeling of perpetual readiness to defend the castle and our lives against the onslaught of attackers.
The feeling of high alert on every trip down the mountain to the spring for water, when you were vulnerable to ambush.
The uneasy sleep of each night, with absolute trust in the guards of watch in the bastions and towers around the castle.
The deep sense of aliveness and appreciation in the chapel, for every peaceful moment afforded us by the Lord above.
And it reminded me of something it’s very easy to forget.

There was never a time in human history when you could leave your home undefended for a week or two, and know that you’ll come back to find everything the way you left it.
You don’t fall asleep at night fearing the barbarian hordes might come over the mountain to burn your village and slay your family and friends.
And yet, this time in human history has the highest number of #dissatisfied
Perhaps over a billion people taking pharmaceuticals for mental malaise.
Plagues of anxiety and depression rampage through the hills and valleys of the otherwise peaceful landscape.
Instead of barbarians, hordes of disturbing thoughts and self-judgments rape and pillage your mind...(more in next comment)
