When I initially heard the news that there was a Black IPA on the cards, I must admit, I rolled my eyes and thought, “ dammit, the fad beer of the year has arrived!” I’m happy to report that not only have I been proven wrong but this Black IPA is an absolute cracker. @rhbcpe
teamed up with @afrocaribbrewing
to bring us, as far as I’m aware, the very first BIPA in South Africa. Previously Lit Area, a nice play on words, pours pitch black with a generous brownish head. The nose is immediately confronted with a forest of pine with some earthy tones lingering in the background. There’s a bit of roasted coffee and chocolate there as well. So you think it’s going to be a porter or stout by another name? You’d be horribly mistaken, there are loads of hops in this ale. The medium body is just wonderful. There is loads of piney character with the hops making this ale really light up. You know you’re drinking an IPA! If there was any doubt, the striking bitterness definitely takes you straight into IPA territory. This is a superb collaboration! I’m glad I got 12. 4,8 out of 5 bottle caps, now go get some. .
