Social Media. You could say I have a love/hate relationship with it. It is literally taking over the world and our everyday lives revolves around it in one way or another. It takes time away from our families, yet it helps to document all our memories that I’m sure we’ll be glad it did later. (Because who develops pictures from film anymore, right??) It helps us keep in touch with friends and family from anywhere in the world, yet it brainwashes us into thinking we need to have the most ideal lives because that’s the picture perfect life that everyone likes to share.
However, as for marketing and business strategies go, social media is a Godsend to us business owners. I’ve been doing hair for just over a decade now, and when I first came out of beauty school and starting working in a salon, building a clientele from nothing was TOUGH! You prayed for walk-ins, you made business cards and handed them out to literally everyone you knew, or anywhere that other businesses would allow you to display, you ran ads in the local newspaper (wait, what’s a newspaper? 📰😜), and word of mouth was still usually what it took to start filling your chair. (By the way, these are all STILL essential marketing strategies!!) However, it took a long time. Years even, to start feeling like you were actually starting to see a steady booking of appointments. But thanks to social media, building a clientele isn’t as daunting as it used to be. Instagram is like a public portfolio of all your work that everyone is able to see. I’ve seen fresh out of beauty school Instagram accounts that have hundreds of thousands of followers and a full book just because they are the younger generation of stylists that grew up with social media and knows exactly how to work it. It’s most definitely time consuming and if you don’t know what your doing, could potentially be a flop. BUT if you take the time to learn it and know your audience, then it doesn’t take long for your social media world to take off. And in doing so, your business can most definitely take off with a huge bang in no time at all. •
