Don't forget - our Afrocentric Communication Theory event featuring Dr. Molefi Asante is TOMORROW night! 🤩 Join us to hear from the founder of Afrocentrism himself as we celebrate Black History Month and gain a better understanding of how to be intersectional communication scholars through this theoretical framework 📝 There will be refreshments available in Templo Mayor at 6:30PM, and the lecture will begin in the Theatre at 7:00PM. If your instructor is offering extra credit, you'll need to sign in/out with your RedIDs. Let us know if you have any questions. See you tomorrow!
New episode! When I asked @angribeen if I should start a podcast, her unequivocal “YES!” propelled me into Feminist Hotdog land. So thankful to her for the support AND that she was able to stop by and talk about the good, bad and ugly of life in NYC among lots of other inspiring topics: #spiderwoman fighting crime while pregnant, #lorenabobbitt getting her due with the help of @jordanpeele , the ongoing bad-assery of @staceyabrams , a podcast about how to deal with sexism in the workplace…the list goes on! YOU NEED THIS EPISODE IN YOUR LIFE! Link in bio!

#TFFs #WordWednesday . For #WordWednesday , we’re still discussing common terms that we hear in feminist and socio-political discussions. This week, let’s talk about the word MARGINALIZE. . So far, we’ve discussed DISCRIMINATION, SYSTEMIC problems, and HEGEMONY. These are things that exist in society and that lead to the marginalization of certain groups of people, like women, POC, LGBTQ+ folks, the disabled, etcetera. To marginalize is to treat someone as if they are not important members of society. . When society marginalizes a certain group of people, it withholds opportunities that can help them advance and improve their lives and communities. (Like how women aren’t allowed to vote in the Ph until 1937, in the US until 1920.) Together with discrimination, marginalization helps maintain the pockets of power in society that only the privileged holds. . So if someone asks you why feminism focuses on empowering women (or why there is a Pride Parade and not a “straight parade” etc.), send them this photo and remind them that we have been marginalized and forced in unimportant and powerless positions in society for so long. This is why there is a need for us to reclaim the power that’s been withheld from us. Now is our time to change the narrative. . And if a man is threatened by how we reclaim our power, tell him to get over his fragile masculinity. . Last Monday, I got my Paragard IUD removed and replaced with a Mirena and good lord, progesterone is no fucking joke. As I continue to explore the medical side of transitioning, it is fascinating to see (at least for me personally) what is natural vs what is learned about gender, from the inside out—fun fact, it’s (always) both. I’m currently struggling with feeling emotionally dysphoric because I’ve cried everyday/more than the entire duration of my hrt. However, I feel torn because I know part of this dysphoria is rooted in my own internalized misogyny; ie, the labeling of this emotional response pattern as “female” / “feminine” and in turn “undesirable” because it codes me as “irrational” and costs me my ability to be taken “seriously” by others and worse, myself. I’m scared that in trying to take care of my physical body, I will “relapse” on the psychosomatic work I’ve been doing to be more of my own agent in my ability to emotionally ground myself. That being said, I must critique my own internalized whiteness and patriarchy in this attempt to “not need” anything from anyone these days in the name of “healthy boundaries.” The fact that I burst into tears when a dear friend offered to let me (literally) lean on them or when a new sweetheart offered to give me a massage unasked makes me pause to consider what motivates me to try so hard to “not need” anything from anybody. The antidote to codependency isn’t individualism under the guise of “self-sufficiency” — it’s this messy thing called love, love that interrogates itself and demands not a perfect answer, but the willingness to ask hard questions and offer the truths we find with mutual care and respect. #trans #transisbeautiful #healthyboundaries #intersectionality #queerhealing #fuckwhitesupremacy #fuckthepatriarchy #transnonbinary #internalizedmisogyny #checkyourselffirst #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

We wanted to share something quick for this Tuesday. Like a #tiptuesday 😋Often women of color forget how important #mentalhealth is. How important it is to realize that we carry a lot inside with us wherever we go. Some of us experience it way more than others based on our socioeconomic status, our citizenship status, our skin color, and many other important factors. (Including trans! ❤) That is why our tip is to keep yourself in mind. Prioritize you! That's what we often share with our girls. Like our dear Maya Angelou who we will share more of soon says, "We are PHENOMENAL WOMEN." No one can tell us otherwise. #lovementoring #poetry #mayaangelou
What is #intersectionality ? Let’s talk about it
Some of y’all may know that the next Olympics of 2020 will be in Tokyo but did you know this city has their first female governor?! . “Tokyo’s proud and stubborn patriarchy hasn’t been the same since July 31, 2016. That’s when the capital city’s 14 million people opted to elect a woman for governor, over Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s chosen candidate. . The establishment didn’t see Yuriko Koike coming. After a brief stint as defense minister in 2007, she spent several quiet years as a parliament member. But by mid-2016, Koike had enough of the revolving door of 60-something men from Japan Inc. central casting running Tokyo. All promised to diversify decision-making, narrow the gender gap, and pull more women into politics. All had failed. So, Koike threw her hat in the ring. . In just 14 months, Koike took on the powerful nuclear and tobacco lobbies. She demanded a detailed accounting of why 2020 Olympics costs are already double initial estimates. She delayed the relocation of the famed Tsukiji fish market because of toxic-soil concerns. Her popularity surged, while Abe’s waned amid cronyism scandals.” @qz . #morewomeninpower #Tokyo #Tokyo2020 #womeninpolitics #olympics2020 #smashthepatriarchy #timeforchange #bethechange #whoruntheworld #girlpower #herstory #empoweringwomen #intersectionality #representationmatters #japan #womenmatter #womenleaders #leaders #leadship

DEI* isn’t shit if we aren’t being intersectional. If you’re only talking about your race, I urge you to dig deeper. Our communities of color have such a vast diversity within it through ability, class, gender, sexual orientation. If we are just staying at replacing able-bodied, thin/fit-privileged black and brown models in the outdoor industry, that isn’t co-liberation. We need to bring the folks in our communities holding intersectional identities to the front. . DEI isn’t enough. We need to continually disrupt white supremacy and I don’t think DEI as it stands is achieving that. We need to ramp this up, make our own selves uncomfortable and make room for those who are in the margins of the margins. . I’m not about a DEI that simulates whiteness with black and brown faces. We need to unsettle people. We need to unsettle ourselves. We need to see our own internalized xenophobias. We need to stop focusing on our areas of oppression and state the areas where we are privileged. . If you are cisgendered—state it. If you are able-bodied—state it. If you have European features—state it. If you have class-privilege—state it. . DEI is mimicking whiteness now. I’m here for decolonization, reparations and co-liberation. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼 I am a lighter skinned BIPOC; have citizenship to Amerikkka; mobile (can walk) disabled person; vision and hearing privileged. I can be read as a “high functioning” neurodivergent person. As a trans person, I can (somehow 🤷🏽‍♂️) be read as a cis-woman. English is my second language but I have the privilege of not retaining my accent. I have university education privilege as a high school drop out. I grew up with ambiguous middle class privilege. . . *DEI stands for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion . 📷: @nickcotephoto . . #queernature #diversifyoutdoors #nothingstraightaboutnature #nativesoutdoors #nativewomenswilderness #queerecology #queersinnature #queersinthewoods #qtpoc #diversityandinclusion #diversityinadventure #intersectionality #decolonizenatureconnection #prideoutside #outsidewithpride #indigenousrising #indigenousresistance #criticalecology

19. ✨Nat Turner✨. Born October 2, 1800, Nat Turner ignited fear in white supremacists and slave masters by starting a slave rebellion in August 1831 when he and a group of slaves murdered their owners; they planned to go to Jerusalem to gather more recruits but just outside Jerusalem, other owners found them and killed them all, except for Nat who escaped and went into hiding for 6 weeks before he was later captured, tried and lynched. by his rebellion and his life story. There was an increased repression of blacks that later strengthened the anti-slavery feeling in the North. This later, in the 1860s, intensified regional tensions which was leading toward the civil war. Nat Turner was a valiant man who had a dreamed of freedom for him and his people; his family. ✊🏽 • • • #NatTurner #bhm #blackhistorymonth #intersectionalfeminism #blacklivesmatter #blm #intersectionality #thefutureisfemale #selflove #empowerment #empowerwomen #education #socialawareness #selfawareness #activism #activist #truth #media #respect #intelligence #patriarchy #system #loveislove #lgbt #sisters #history
Feel free to add to the list. I've definitely been guilty of some of these in the past. Really appreciate the people who called me out and urged me to educate myself ✨❤️. Also, this is not meant as a personal attack to anyone, it's just a reminder to reflect on your feminism. If you're guilty of any of these, consider this a call out and please educate yourself on how this behavior is harmful and make your feminism more intersectional. • • • • • • • • • • • • #feminism #activism #feminist #activist #intersectionality #intersectionalfeminism #systematicoppression #equality #equalrights #pickme #whitefeminism #feminist #activist #equity

It’s this idea that any single one of us could have the monopoly on the solution to address racism and white supremacy. • Many find the need to put our stake in one camp or another - you’re either Malcom or Martin, right? • Is there not room for acknowledging the legitimacy of a variety of models, approaches & methods to dismantle this violent, pervasive, deeply rooted beast? • No one has THE SOLE SOLUTION.
