Adding to the list of great shows in LES: you’re looking at @sable_elyse
, her first show with @jtt_nyc.
Some may be familiar with Smith by her inclusion in the @newmuseum
’s 2017 #trigger
show, where her powerful neon piece, #landscapeIII
, was a standout, or it may be through her current #ironwoodland
sign (officially titled #cream
, after the Wu) that can be seen on the @highlineartnyc
until March of next year. Smith is also currently an #artistinresidence @studiomuseum.
For her install at JTT, the artist continues to explore the subject of incarceration and the criminal justice system, and its impact on both an institutional and individual scale.
Pictured are three works from Smith’s #coloringbookseries
, whose content comes, in part, from a coloring book the artist found and which is used as a tool to familiarize children with the court system. Suffice it to say, the book is problematic, and Smith engages with it by enlarging its pages and reworking them by hand. Not pictured is a video installation that is central to the show, setting its tone and providing a kind of score that I encourage all to go and see and hear.
