The biggest mistake we make in dealing with the devil is trying to fight him and the voices of temptation. It's tiring and often we end up with spiritual bruises. But what if instead of fighting the darkness we turn on the light! But how? Simply enough, the answer is meditate! Meditation is not the act of having no thoughts, but rather the practice of creating space between your thoughts and the whispers of the devil and your self. In Islam the practice of "Muraqaba" is the practice of “observing” or "watching over" the fleeting and constantly changing projections of the mind, almost like an observer who is watching leaves float by on a flowing river. As we watch our streaming thoughts we do not engage in them, analyzing, judging, or shaming them we simply are aware we have a thought and let it go by like clouds in the skies of our mind. With meditation we learn how to make a distinction between who we are and what we think. As Rumi says, “Your thoughts are a veil on the face of the Moon. That Moon is your heart, and those thoughts cover your heart. So let them go, just let them fall into the water." It is natural to become distracted as we meditate so every time we want to analyze and dissect a passing thought it helps to gently return our awareness to the chanting of the name “Allah”. As we keep realigning our focus from wanting to jump and engage with our thoughts to turning that energy towards Allah, a growing peace slowly blossoms within us. Over time this process of Muraqaba will help us from not getting too attached to our thoughts and judgements helping us to turn from shame to surrender. As Rumi says, “The quieter you become the more you are able to hear.” To become more religious, spiritual, and God-conscious does not mean we no longer are tested with the voices of the devil and the thoughts conjured by our ego, but rather that we have more awareness around the strategies of the voices we harbor that call us towards darkness, shame, and separation.
