Although likely best known for his iconic win of the 1976 F1 World Championship, James Hunt was also known for his sense of humor and killer charm. In 1975, Hunt scored the Hesketh Racing team’s only F1 victory before signing with McLaren in 1976. The 2013 film Rush depicted the story of the 1976 racing season and the rivalry between Hunt and Niki Lauda.
2. Dan Gurney (📸: @thegaragista
Winning in Formula 1, Le Mans, IndyCar and NASCAR, Dan Gurney was arguably one of motorsports’s best racers of all time. He was a skilled innovator, owning a company called All American Racers which built race cars called Eagles. The great Jim Clark stated that Gurney was the only rival he feared. Gurney also set the trend of spraying champagne on the victory podium after his 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans win.
3. Michele Mouton (📸:@frdf_female_rally_drivers_fans
Michele began her career in rallying, with one of the best rally cars available at the time and a gift from her father - a Renault Alpine A110. From 1981-1985, Mouton was an official driver for Audi. In 1986, Mouton raced for the Peugeot team, winning six out of eight events at the German Rally Championship. Mouton helped pave the way for women in motorsport, and is currently the President of the Women & Motorsport Commission.
4. Mario Andretti (📸: @pete_chopping
Beginning his racing career at 18 years old in stock car events, Andretti has succeeded in various types of racing. In 1968, Andretti made his first Formula 1 debut, taking pole position at Watkins Glen in his Lotus 49B. Andretti was victorious in the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji and in 1978, Andretti won the Formula One World Championship. Andretti’s desire to succeed continues to inspire fans, and is summed up in his famous quote: “If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough”.
