Detail of “Time Compression (A Light at the End, A Light at the Beginning), 2018 by James Clar. #lightart #jamesclar #installationart #ledlights #janelombardgallery #detailshot
Enrico Isamu Öyama wrote about James Clar for a feature in @transitmagazine ! Photo credit: @collinhughes 📸 One can manipulate shapes and images in photoshop but James Clar’s 3D LED sculptures push spacial limits by incorporating elements of technological design in his artwork. The artist’s LED works radiate color similar to the way a computer screen emits light. Clar suggests that humans are becoming responsive to the rhythm of digital devices. We are under an illusion that we can maintain boundaries between ourselves and technology. Öyama focuses on “No Gravity,” 2017 and explains that the beautiful, upturned hanging ladder incites a feeling of anxiety because it challenges our sense of stability in the physical world. #jamesclar #janelombardgallery #lightart #chelseagallery #ledlighttherapy Transit magazine is Japanese. James Clar’s solo exhibition “The World Never Ends” opens Thursday, September 6th! Reception from 6-8PM @janelombardgallery. New York friends - don’t miss the opening of James Clar: The World Never Ends @janelombardgallery 💥 6 pm on September 6 Dissociation and the fragmentation of reality through technology are the subjects of investigation in James Clar’s exhibition. Clar creates an immersive multimedia installation that embraces and opens wide the blurred boundaries of the tangible and the metaphysical. It explores the notions of reality, virtual-reality, and ponders if in our technologically intertwined world, a new form of reality is taking shape. The central installation in the exhibition is a multi-channel video projection entitled Tibetan Book of the Dead (Chapters 1, 2, 3) [2018]. In this environment the videos are distorted and mixed through an installation structure that includes elements of lights, water, and forest vegetation. The distortions in the projection mix the videos together like a visual dreamscape, or a dream of the forest. The title of the installation comes from the book of the same name describing the experiences consciousness has in the period after death and the next rebirth. #jamesclar #newyork #contemporaryart #janelombardgallery #technology #Art #videogames #japanesegamers #tokyo #bookofthedead

“Derrame 1977 [Accident],” 2014 by Lucy + Jorge Orta. This painting is part of the “Derrame 1977” series that originates from Jorge Orta’s observation of Argentina during the sweeping political and social unrest during the mid-century. In this context, “derrame” — a Spanish word — simultaneously means a spill, a leak and an outpouring. The series epitomizes his impression of a society in chaos, clashing systems creating disorder. #lucyandjorgeorta #ortastudio #janelombardgallery #acrylicpaintings #derrame

Howard Smith: 1 + 1 + 1 … paintings and works on paper - Jane Lombard Gallery, NY. 📍Location: Jane Lombard Gallery @janelombardgallery , 518 West 19th Street, New York, NY10011 ▪️Howard Smith: 1+1+1…Paintings and Works on Paper, 23 May - 23 June 2018 🔻Observations: dynamic arrangements that transmute in relation to the viewer’s perspective ▪️This is the artist’s 21st solo exhibition, encompassing his substantial and vibrant body of work. By harnessing light, expression and pigments, he fuses the material and sublime. Smith’s watercolors are a study in method and pattern. The artist carefully applies and reapplies paint to build and vary the depth of color. The direction, velocity, and intensity of his brushstrokes have changed frequently during his career. His staccato marks transport viewers to a plane enveloped in vivid color. Nowadays, Smith pushes spatial limits by drastically varying the size of his paintings.
“Envelope Drawing #5 ,” and Envelope Drawing #10 ,” 1995-2018 by Howard Smith. These works have been associated with the Fluxus movement, though Smith avoids labeling his approach. He used these envelopes to to test his brushstroke and to blot excess paint. These unique envelopes can be found next to works on paper. “1 + 1 + 1 ... paintings and works on paper” closes today. The gallery is open all day until 6pm. #janelombardgallery #howardsmith #fluxus
