Fun fact about Alcatraz. It was originally given to a business man by the Governor of Mexico. The pretense was that a lighthouse be built on it for port use in 1846. Later that year, the same business man sold Alcatraz to the governor of California for $5,000. The island remained untouched until in 1850 it was designated as a military zone and to remain unused for nearly 10 years. A garrison was built on it that was used during the civil war in the 1860s, and it wasn’t turned into the prison that we know it as until 1930s.
