Y is for yew.
The iconic clipped yews of Packwood House. According to legend the yew trees at Packwood represent ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ and are over 350 years old. Packwood is now looked after by the National Trust who have started a phased rejuvenation programme to ensure the yews’ future.

Huge thanks to Marcia Kies and her excellent team: Anita Singh Cardoso, Leo Jacobs and Brian Migliaccio at Hasson Company Realtors for their commitment and dedication to getting our home sold, for the beautiful photos and marketing materials, for the many showings, for checking on our pets when we were traveling, for all the hand holding and advice during negotiations, inspection and close, and for always being there.
We depart on Monday in search of our next place to call home, and we are looking forward to our next great adventure.
No matter where we go, we will always keep you and our beautiful home and gardens here in Lake Oswego, Oregon forever in our hearts.
Anna and George Porter

Trying to get into the festive spirit...Snowberries also doing their best to invoke the winter mood. No chance of snow in Kenilworth just yet so snowberries will have to do... building a snowman might be a challenge... 🤔 ⛄️ #white #snowberry #symphoricarpos
This is my final look into Chanticleer for this season. I absolutely plan to go back when the garden opens in March!
Is this the end or just the beginning?!?
I’ve been writing about walls and other boundaries for my regular feature in the next issue of Listed Heritage magazine. ⠀
This is one of my favourites that we designed for a pair of new walled gardens in Sussex. The design is based on a lovely Lutyens detail using crease tiles which are curved roofing tiles designed to keep water off the brickwork below. ⠀
Under it a pair of roof tiles direct the flow of rain water off the brickwork and provide a pretty flair and shadow line below. ⠀
All the bricks and tiles were reclaimed from a building that was being taken down nearby so they fit perfectly with the local vernacular. ⠀
I hand choose all details like this and the first 40,000 bricks I chose were so lovely they were pinched for the house! Lucky I found some more.⠀
To finish the look we designed the plant supports and had them made by a local blacksmith. ⠀
The pleached trees and columns beyond the wall are to filter the wind and frame the view. They are from Hillier’s, so field grown in the UK.⠀
The Sussex landscape beyond is worth gazing at! In a rare break are the co-creators and the guardian of the garden. Lovely Ketch the head gardener and Nathan Donovan who worked for Frogheath then.⠀
The garden won the Sussex Heritage Trust Award for Landscape, but most importantly will be a great legacy for this special spot for many years to come.⠀

Model of a new style of back to back houses updated for modern living. This was part of the exhibition at the Design Museum which was really interesting. This style of house over looks a tree lined square and all have their own private terrace but no green space of their own. Space is a premium these days but surely having some soil of your own to make a garden/green area is a basic need/requirement? So often housing developers either bury rubbish and cover with a thin layer of topsoil and call it a garden or they create a space completely overlooked so people won’t want to go out and engage with nature. Finally some people are starting to realise how important horticulture is for human survival but also mental health.....housing developers need to take this into account!

O is for orange
Orange seeds of iris foetidissima. Apparently these plants are often grown for the seeds which don’t usually fall. Cut the whole stem and use them in a floral display. They last for ages... who knew? 😜🤓 #orange #seeds #irisfoetidissima #iris
