After the success of Halloween II, producers Irwin Yablans, Joseph Wolf and Dino de Laurentiis again approached John Carpenter and Debra Hill to make a third part of Halloween.
According to Fangoria magazine #22
, Hill's response was "No, absolutely not! Not, that is, unless the new picture would not be a sequel, and would be totally different from the previous two films, Halloween and Halloween II."
Moustapha Akkad said he was not sure about making a third, but De Laurentiis replied: "Don't worry, you'll get your profits in advance."
This is how it was agreed to make Halloween III, a film different from its predecessors. A standalone Halloween film.
