Today in @dcmlifestyle workshop we focussed on mobility. #Jointmobility of shoulder, hips, spine. We were challenging our bodies moving out of its comfort zone, feeling an intensity and breathing through it. He introduced us to #ladderflows which were a sequence of #vinyasa flows, with stacked movements creating a very long, intense sweaty but fun practice, using #PropioceptionNeuromuscularFacilitation #PNF and spinal twists. Sooo much learned, body feels alive stretched, new yet tired. An extremely informative, interactive and challenging workshop. I'd highly recommend Dan's teaching and look forward to joining him again somewhere in the world!! Kneeling Hip Openers #painfreemovement @fitomizefitness Performing hip openers can go a long way toward improving general mobility and alleviate discomfort. ___ When choosing hip stretches, it is important to understand that the body, and more specifically the hips, function in a three-dimensional plane, which means that mobility stretches should incorporate all three planes of motion to be most effective. Today’s move - kneeling hip openers is a great way to incorporate different planes of motion and can be used as part of a warm-up or performed after bouts of sitting. As with any exercise, repetition and consistency are the keys to success. ___ HOW 1. Start in a kneeling position on a cushioned mat. Sit back in your feet as best you can with your toes tucked under. 2. Tuck the pelvis and keep the spine in neutral alignment. Hinge forward using your glutes and core to hold you up in a tall kneeling position. 3. Move the right foot lateral to the body, keeping the knee aligned with the center toe. Sink the hips toward the knee. Hold this adductor stretch for a few seconds. Repeat on the other side. 4. Perform for a desired amount of time or reps. 5. Note - feel free to try to move the leg forward for more of a hip flexor stretch or at a 45 degree angle to work on different ranges of motion. LOADED LAT MOBILITY --- The lats are a very large muscle group that connects the arm, hip, and spine. They are important in a wide variety of movements. And they are a common place where I hear people say they feel tight or stiff. Stretching the lats can be a fine short term strategy, but let's level up that stretching. I use to be one of those people who would spend 20 minutes at the gym incessantly stretching my lats. My shoulder felt tight, and my lats felt like they were steel cables. It would help improve my shoulder for a while, but nothing really lasted. - I started incorporating loaded mobility for my shoulders addressing my weaknesses (shoulder mobility) and it's night and day difference. Adding progressive load to improve my mobility has taken time, but I've been at a point for quite a while that I don't feel the need to dead hang from a pull up bar for 5 minutes. And with these movements in the video, you also get direct lat, arm, and a bit of ab work all in one. 1️⃣ Bent arm rope pullover 2️⃣ Straight Arm rope pullover 3️⃣ Rope Press up under tension + unilateral 4️⃣ Concentric + Eccentric vs Eccentric only - 🔑  The lats are a huge muscle important in connecting the shoulders, back, and hips.Use these drills to build strength, mobility, and improve movement quality. When dealing with trained athletes something that is very common is limited range of motion in the primal movements due to tight fascia, tight ligaments and over developed musculature. - On the left you can see that upon normal “forward flexion” of the lumbar spine the head naturally extends instead of following the natural curvature of the spine. The lumbar erectors are inhibiting the full flexion of the spine and there is restrictions through the thoracic vertebrae and hip flexors. - TREATMENT: Fascia release through quads, lumbar erectors and lats. - Cervical mobilization to allow the head to fall neutral, thoracic and rib cage mobilization and lumbar/hip/SI joint release. - This treatment took 30 minutes total 👊🏼. - @coachmatthewfox#osteopathy #jointmobility #rehab #athletictraining #functionalmedicine #bodybuilding #transformation #jodiifoxosteopathy

As a coach, about every 10 years some eager and excited athlete shows up and says “Teach me everything you know, I swear I’ll do it all until it’s perfect!” ▪️ With @johnnylunalima this is what it was like. And I was somewhat uncertain if anyone had the discipline and motivation to take on what I know I can offer in a remote coaching scenario.🤷🏻‍♂️ I was wrong! ▪️ I jokingly call him the Karate Kid because he is the eager student that wants more and more and when he asks me for it, I pretty much just groan and say “Paint the fence Johnny! Wax On Wax Off!” ▪️ What I mean by this is, you have to know your ABC’s before you can form words and sentences. How can you expect to perform better if you are unable to move your joints? This exercise can be performed with or without the band, following the instructions below: . 🔹Lay on your side with your hips & knees bent around 90 degrees. . 🔹Hold one side of the band fixed towards the ground while twisting only your torso and moving the other arm towards the opposite side. . 🔹Rotate the head along with the body and keep your legs stationary in the flexed position. . 🔹Feel the sweet sweet stretch in your upper and mid-back. . . Minimise the schedule Minimise food Minimise footware👣 In this fast paced - instant world 🌎 we’ve become accustomed to throw away - single use and materialistic accumulation. Minimise it all - we don’t NEED much at all. The greatest gift 🎁 of witnessing death is the lesson that you can’t take it with you. My mother died of Motor Neurone Disease and this above lesson was drilled home even more powerfully as with MND you lose the ability to do things progressively and quickly! One day you can pick up a cup to drink - the next you can’t. One day things are okay - the next you’ve got 3-5years of rapid degeneration and your independence is taken away. So how does this apply to minimalism? Look at what drives your thoughts and desires... enjoy experiences - collect memories and leave love in people’s hearts 💕 ♥️ Minimise the schedule and ‘to- do’ lists. This is especially important as the “silly season” approaches. If you’ve followed @salubrioushabits for a while you’ll know I’m a BIG advocate for minimal footwear - barefoot whenever possible and barefoot in nature weekly (if not daily) Look around the space in which you live - is every wall and corner covered? Are the cupboards and wardrobes full to overflowing? How much do we truly NEED? Even our food intake and what we store in our fridge and cupboards. Just look at the size of your fridge! There are many things in our lives which encourage consuming. Start A Habit - Pause and ask yourself... do I REALLY need this? For the Festive Season - make plans to spend time ⏰ rather than buying more “stuff”. Giveaway - clean out or start the simple pattern of, if you buy something and bring it on the house - take something out or if you have a lot, take two things out! Travelling is a great way to not only enjoy experiences and collect memories - it’s an amazing way to realise you don’t need much to live!

#SportSpecificSaturdayMM : Neck Training for Contact Sports . Any sport or movement form that has an element of contact like Combat Martial Arts (boxing, wrestling, MMA), football (soccer) or rugby, or any kind of impact can benefit from increasing the strength of the muscles in the neck. . What this does is helps to stabilize your head so that your opponent has a hard time bringing you out of position to take advantage of you. It can help to keep your brain from rattling around in your head as much and can lead to a longer career and a healthier brain both during competition and after. . A great way to work on these is with a neck harness but if you don’t have one, another thing you can do is get a stability ball, place it on the wall, and perform neck exercises with it. . Perform these movements GENTLY! This is not the time for your mixture of death metal and snorting lines of preworkout off the gym bench. These movements should be performed gently so that they help build the neck. Not break it. . While these are GREAT for sports, they don’t have to just be for athletes. Everyday-people can benefit from neck work to do something as small increase the strength and posture of their neck to as large as prehabbing it in case of a car accident. It always helps to be prepared! . Train your neck so your body has no weaknesses and get aboard the Gain Train!

Here is another add on move following the posts from previous 2 days ☺️! These additional moves are great for hip flexor and hamstring flexibility for dance 💃🏻 and specifically getting splits 🐒, along with any sport that could benefit from split level type of flexibility 🤗. Banded Movement Mobilizations are the easiest way to deal with muscle stiffness and restore full range of motion to both muscles and joints for improved neuromuscular dynamics🤓. All you need is a pull up band anchored to a pole (a door anchor, or sturdy object to anchor it to can also be used!) for this effective release 😀🎉! 1️⃣Place the band at the very top of your posterior thigh and kneel back until tension is felt from the band pulling you forward. 2️⃣While maintaining a strong glute squeeze on the leg that you are kneeling on, oscillate forward into a deep hip flexor stretch and then drive the hip back to straighten the front knee as much as possible. This is another add on move following yesterday’s post and there will be more to come🤩! These additional moves are great for hip flexor flexibility for dance and splits💃🏻, or to help release tension along the anterior chain and tie in back extensibility 🤗. Banded Movement Mobilizations are the easiest way to deal with muscle stiffness and restore full range of motion to both muscles and joints for improved neuromuscular dynamics🤓. All you need is a pull up band anchored to a pole (a door anchor, or sturdy object to anchor it to can also be used!) for this effective release 😀🎉! Place the band at the very top of your posterior thigh and kneel back until tension is felt from the band pulling you forward. Hold yourself in position by maintaining a strong glute squeeze on the leg that you are kneeling on. Reach the arms behind you as pictured (swipe ➡️ to see second 📷 too!) to deepen the stretch through the anterior chain. Take a pause in your furthest endpoint before returning back to starting position. Everyone’s endpoint will be different and it’s totally😎cool if the hand reaching towards foot doesn’t actually touch it, it will improve with time 🙂! Freestyle and play with what feels good to you 🙃...if you find one arm is harder to reach back....keep working on that to keep making gains in symmetry between each side🙂. THORACIC AND SHOULDER STRENGTH --- Yes, building strength is important in the t-spine. And yes, the shoulders and scapula are clearly involved. But the focal point of these is getting strength in the muscles around the t-spine. I also want to mention that you don't have to go all the way up to the hardest drill on this series. It is going to depend on your goals and why you're performing the exercises, but these are some very challenging movements to hit the upper extremities and spine. I'm a huge fan of closed chain shoulder movements, and these check that box. Closed chain shoulder strength incorporates the entire shoulder complex and spine. There's nothing wrong with doing some isolation work for muscles of the arm, but training big movements and large groups of muscles should also be a portion of your training. Find a wall, and give these a shot (probably don't wear shoes, RIP wall) 1️⃣ T-spine rotation plank + weights 2️⃣ Modified half handstand press through  3️⃣ Renegade rows + elevated rows 4️⃣ Modified handstand + unilateral hip extension I included the walking up/down the wall as doing that slowly is also a very difficult dynamic move. Plus, you're basically spider man when you're doing it. - 🔑 Try some closed chain shoulder and thoracic spine strengthening exercises to go with your mobility exercise.
