One of the suspects accused of killing Bronx teen Lesandro (Junior) Guzman-Feliz was slashed in the face by a rival gang member inside a Rikers Island housing unit Tuesday, the Daily News has learned.
Manuel Rivera, 18, was attacked by Tyreek Johnson, 21, inside the Robert N. Davoren Center (RNDC) on Rikers at 10 a.m., according to internal city Correction Department records.
The incident was captured on surveillance video.
Johnson, who is in jail on murder charges, is a reported member of the Bloods street gang.
Rivera, a suspected Trinitarios gang member, is among the accused in the horrific machete killing of 15-year-old Lesandro.
Jail staff struggled to lockdown the other inmates in the area for an extended period of time because jail doors weren’t working properly, two jail insiders familiar with the incident said. The department’s Emergency Service Unit was called to the area to assist, records show.
“There are several jails in the department, and RNDC is one of them, in which the cell security locking devices are compromised,” said Joe Russo, the union president who represents top jail supervisors.
“The inmates can easily defeat the mechanism and come out of their cells,” he added. “This puts staff at risk.”
The Correction Department has tried to move all of the alleged killers to jurisdictions outside the city to protect them from death threats, but only two were accepted by Suffolk County officials, one source said.
