Bon Iver’s third studio album, 22, A Million. I remember listening to this album the night it was released and being caught completely off guard. Lets just say that this album had to grow on me a ton haha, now it’s my personal favourite Bon Iver album.
The electronic sound of 22, A Million was something I don’t think anyone expected, considering Bon Iver was known to have a folk sound before this album. I also don’t think anyone expected how amazing it works on this. The way that the electronics are used on this album are so precise and detailed. They are used as the primary sound of an instrumental such as “10 d E A T h b R E a s T ⚄ ⚄” and on the other side of it they are used super subtlety on a track like 8 (circle). I think what makes this album work as well as it does is that the electronics don’t take away any emotion that the band are trying to get across. You can hear every bit of emotion from Justin even when his vocals are through what is called The Messina, a device created by Justin and Chris Messina. It’s a super unique sound that at first took me by surprise, but has now become one of my favourite aspects of this album. For example, a track like 715 – CRΣΣKS is vocals through the Messina alone, but sounds so full and grand. It also ends up being one of the most emotional tracks of the album, no doubt.
This is an album you can put on at any moment and feel so much from track to track. 8 (circle) will forever be one of my favourite songs. It’s such a realistic and fulfilling song that is so full of life pouring out at every second. The instrumental is so warm and Justin’s vocal performance is so passionate. The lyrical themes of this track in particular is something that I believe is what makes it stand out for me. The idea of getting through intricate struggles, and/or doing what you need to do, regardless of whatever consequence, to move forward and experience what’s to come here in this life and it being okay is warming to me. Warming; the perfect word to describe 22, A Million. Do yourself a favour and listen to this album. It’s a much needed album considering how cold everything is this time of year. Thank you @boniver
