Ch: Dialogue || The English translation of Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s poem ‘Tanhai’ (Solitude).
Faiz Ahmed Faiz is one of the most widely read authors of the sub-continent. Faiz was a progressive thinker and writer and his views on justice, humanity, and peace resonate throughout his work. Much of Faiz’s work is politically charged, having lived through successive military regimes. His work is noted for its casual tone, a conversation between the elite and the common man. His works, especially his ghazals (sonnets), have been translated in numerous languages and sung my many artists in the sub-continent. .
My introduction to Faiz was through Iqbal Bano’s beautiful rendition of Faiz’s greatest ghazals. Following this, my uncle (Prof. Khalid Mahmood) gifted me a book on Faiz, after marking all of his favourite poems. Faiz was always close to his heart - Faiz’s famous black and white silhouette always hung over his writing desk. Faiz had been his PHD supervisor on labour reforms in Pakistan and long-time companion in the progressive movement.
If you are interested in knowing more about Faiz’s work but like me, your Urdu capabilities are limited, I would recommend getting hold of the book “100 Poems By Faiz Ahmad Faiz”. The book contains the original urdu text, a transliteration and translation. .
