Welcome to the world little kiwi! 🐣
Bird keeper Debs, with our vet team on stand-by, assisted this precious kiwi to hatch yesterday – carefully peeling pieces of shell away as it wriggled out.
This intervention was necessary as the chick was positioned the wrong way around in its egg – with its head between its legs! When this happens, kiwi are unable to use their powerful legs to break through the surface of the shell – requiring some Auckland Zoo help to hatch.
This kiwi is the fourth Operation Nest Egg (ONE) chick to hatch this 2018/19 season and, excitingly, we have many more on the way!
We’re helping make the world a better place for (and with!) kiwi with our Wild Work partners @kiwisforkiwi
and Thames Coast Kiwi Care – incubating, hatching and releasing chicks on to predator-free islands where they can thrive is an important part of this.
