My knee acts up a little at times but that doesn’t stop me! Did a casual workout with light weights instead.

That’s a wrap on my lil vacay to the West coast. 🔑 When it comes to joint stabilization, the key to remember is that muscles are always supposed to be the primary stabilizer. Ligaments, cartilage, fascia, etc. all have a role in joint proprioception and stability, but they are never meant to be the primary stabilizer.
👉 In the case of knee pain, it is far too common place to see practitioners put patients in braces and/ or apply tape. This is nothing but a symptom modification gimmick that will not increase stability, increase function, or decrease risk of injury. 💡 As medical professionals, it should be our goal to reestablish normal function, at the neuromuscular level. This is what will allow patients to return to play without gimmicks like tape and braces.
🎥 Video two shows some exercises and drills that we have been doing with this patient. Notice that even though he is ACL deficient, he is still able to cut, change direction, twist, and do several other dynamic activities without giving way or experiencing pain.
✅ If this patient was to return to some kind of sport activity, we would recommend a custom ACL brace. This is one of the exceptions when it comes to bracing. The purpose of this specific brace would be to limit joint degradation and further injury for a patient that is already deficient.

Before braces production we measure your legs and made a plaster cast. It is at this stage main features of your brace will laid. Correct measurements not only ensure the brace fits your muscles correctly, but that the brace works with the skeleton of your leg to beef up the knee joint and reduce the chance for injury. We analyses your legs to indicate old injuries and bumps. By laser we measure knee joint, ankle, look for leg axis. Leg axis is straight line which connect ankle, knee joint and upper iliac crest in the middle. Once your leg has been measured the chart containing all your leg's dimensions is prepared, we are going to the next stage – creating sceleton of your leg.
We put a plastic cast on your leg and get an exact replica. To this skeleton of your future braces is placed several layers of carbon. Further to the skeleton we put on a titanium hinge and aluminum plate. All of this is again covers by several other layers of carbon. In average that is 6 layers of carbon.
Move on, the heat is coming. The product is packed into a vacuum bag and cured at a temperature of 120ºC for five hours. The rough brace is taken to the cut out room to get the shape closer to its final form.
Nearly finished product is processed, polished, assembled, is staffed by hinges, straps, fasteners and pads. Now your custom knee brace is ready! You can try them!
We described main stages of production, peculiarities and details stay out of the picture. Production of 1 pair of braces takes 3-4 weeks. The weight of 1 brace depends on the size and in average is 800 grams. For snowboarding and wakeboarding we made special openings to make brace lighter. 👉IT band pain is associated with pain either near the lateral hip or lateral knee. People will point to the IT band as the reason for the pain but pointing to an individual anatomical structure “causing” pain is not supported in evidence. However, it is entirely possible that the structures in those areas are sensitized from overload - which may be from physical overload (increased running volume as example), emotional overload (you just lost your job as example), or other factors.
💪What to do when it’s a problem though? Number one should be to look at stressors - physical, psychological, emotional, etc. and address them as needed. This may mean curtailing running volume, reconceptualize why your pain flares up when you have money issues, etc. Second thing is to start building greater tissue capacity and individual tolerance, That’s where this video comes in. .
🏋️♀️ Most of the literature supports improving strength, rate of force development, power, etc for hip abduction, hip external rotation, and hip extension. The movements in this video can help work on those factors!

😕 Modality based PT in 2018?
❓Are the latest gimmicks and gadgets that physical therapists, and other healthcare practitioners, are using today any different than the ones used in the 80’s? All we have really done is traded bogus modalities for bogus modalities that look cool and have catchy names.
🧠 Do modalities treat the root cause of pathology? Or, do they just alter and cover up symptoms for short term? Did you go to school for seven years just to help somebody “feel better,” have better range of motion, decrease swelling, and/or “loosen up tightness” for the next couple of hours?
🛑 Our challenge to you this week is to stop using modalities. Rather than focusing on symptoms as listed above, focus on root cause analysis, critical thinking and increasing long term function. That means no cupping, icing, ultrasound, needles, E-stim of any kind, traction, tape, braces, vibration guns, etc. Rather than going against neuromuscular physiology, figure out how to use it to your advantage.

I thought this was actually very interesting. I want to start jumping soon but I need to make sure it’s safe to do so. I noticed my knees slightly go in during the takeoff and landing of the squat. I also get slightly more extension and power through my left leg. Lacking power and full extension in my right knee is an obvious expectation from lacking an ACL.
I plan to work on the technique of the jumping squat as well as Glute Med exercises to help resist a valgus knee posture.
