If you asked me 6 years ago if I would make OR eat pork lard...it would likely have been a hard no.
This journey on a whole food diet has come a long way. I grew up on margarine...😮 which is a huge no no in my house. But margarine back then was "healthy". Just like everything "low fat" was healthy.
Then one day, a wise man asked me if I wanted butter or margarine and when I answered margarine, he said: "flies don't even eat that shit". That stuck with me.
I purchased my pork leaf fat from @ravenwoodfarmlife
where I can trust they raise their pigs best; on pasture and with love!
I bought the fat for $3/lb. I believe a typical conventional pastuerized butter is $5-6/lb. Grassfed pastuerized butter goes for $11-12/lb here.
In the winter, the english man of this house likes to have a few good ole traditional savory pies (he would like them all year if I would make them). Each pie is 1/2lb of butter. I would consider this a good per pie savings!
We love going back to basics here on the homestead. The minimal labour involved in rendering our own lard, seems worth it to me.
