WHAT HAPPENS TO SEX WORKERS WHEN THEY GET OLD?
is a shelter for #elderly #sexworkers
. It offers its residents refuge, food, health services and a place to learn about their #HumanRights
, as well as courses to help them rediscover their self-confidence and deal with traumatic aspects of their lives. Casa Xochiquetzal provides a space to age with #dignity
for a group of vulnerable #women
who are often invisible to society at large. It is the only such #shelter
in existence in #LatinAmerica
In this photo: Norma Angelica (R) uses sign language of her own invention to communicate with Patricia (L), who is deaf, both are residents of Casa Xochiquetzal. - Norma Angelica is from Tabasco and is 53. She came to Mexico City at age 18 and married Ramiro. They were together 11 years. When her husband died, she went home to care for her ailing mother. Ten years ago, her mother died, and her brothers took everything, including the house, and left Norma Angelica in the street. She returned to Mexico City very depressed and turned to #prostitution
. She came to Casa Xochiquetzal in 2013. - Patricia is from Tijuana and is 68. She is deaf. She has lived in #Mexico
City for 30 years. Her parents died when she was young, and she began working as a model at a young age. Later, she worked as a showgirl in a Tijuana cabaret, which is where she met her boyfriend. She began touring the country and moved to Mexico City with the man, who was already married with children. Patricia’s only son was kidnapped when he was two months old. One day, she learned that she and her boyfriend were being evicted from their home, and his children, who disliked Patricia, took their father away and locked Patricia in the house alone. Some neighbors later found her in a very bad state, and left her in the street. She came to Casa Xochiquetzal in 2016.
